Moon Knight was just pulled back from crossing a deadly line by another Marvel hero, and bringing them back together could be just what he needs.
The following contains major spoilers for Moon Knight #12, available now from Marvel.
Marc Spector has taken on many roles over the years, but none have been so meaningful as that of the leader of the Midnight Mission. Moon Knight has embarked on a whole new kind of crusade against evil, one that has seen him working harder than ever before to make up for his blood-soaked past. Unfortunately, Zodiac has seemingly pushed Marc back over the edge. As bad as that is, there is still one person who can pull him back from the brink, and Steven Grant has arrived not a moment too late to do just that.
When Moon Knight #12 (by Jed MacKay, Alessandro Cappuccio, Rachelle Rosenberg, and VC’s Cory Petit) brought the titular hero face-to-face with Zodiac once more, the situation quickly went from bad to worse. Though Marc and his allies were able to turn back the tide of battle, the hero made it perfectly clear that his intentions for Zodiac are fatal. In what would have been the final moments of Zodiac’s life, an unseen force stayed Moon Knight’s hand, and with that Steven Grant has made his own triumphant return.
Marc Spector has always been a tormented figure, and in dealing with those struggles early on in life he created new personas in the form of Steven Grant and Jake Lockley. The latter was presented as a cab driver, while the former made a name for himself as a charming financier. Far from the man Marc was, Steven often had a grasp on things that Marc’s frantic, often broken psyche couldn’t maintain. He has also been the one to most frequently keep Marc from crossing any lines they couldn’t return from, and it seems that is exactly what he is poised to do once more.
By keeping Marc from killing Zodiac, Steven has potentially saved him from a personal downfall. There is the obvious concern that Zodiac will simply return to pose a threat yet again, but that wouldn’t sting nearly as much as seeing Moon Knight fall back into his overtly brutal tactics. More than that, he has introduced a new wrinkle into the world of the Midnight Mission. Marc has arguably done his best work through the Midnight Mission, and ending Zodiac’s life could have easily destroyed whatever good faith the Mission has built with those around it.
Now that Steven is in the driver’s seat, there is no telling how much more the Midnight Mission could accomplish. He may not be as driven as his counterpart, but the difference between Steven and Marc isn’t as vast as it seems. If anything, Steven’s more level head will surely keep Marc out of trouble, at least more so than the latter would be capable of on his own. He might also be the one to truly separate the Midnight Mission from Moon Knight’s prior reputation, which is precisely what Marc has been working towards this entire time.
Even though he was the one to seal Khonshu away in Asgard, Marc hasn’t been able to shake the connection that exists between himself and his patron god. Steven likely won’t be able to, either, although he absolutely will give Khonshu an unexpected surprise. If anything, Steven’s presence will stand as a firm indicator that Khonshu isn’t alone in looking out for Moon Knight, albeit with what can only be far better intentions. Assuming that’s the case, Steven’s most recent intrusion might just be exactly what Marc has needed all along.
