The Akebi’s Sailor Uniform Season 2 anime will have Komichi Akebi and her friends celebrating the summer with swimsuits, beach trips, and gymnastics. But when will Akebi-chan no Sailor-fuku Season 2 come out?
For the first season, the anime was produced by Japanese animation Studio CloverWorks, which is known for producing the popular Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai anime, co-producing Darling in the FranXX, the Fate/Grand Order anime series, the good-yet-abbreviated Horimiya anime, and the original story Wonder Egg Priority, which which was well-reviewed despite suffering from major production issues and delays.
In 2022, CloverWorks also released the My Dress-Up Darling anime, Tokyo 24th Ward, In The Heart of Kunoichi Tsubaki, and the Shadows House Season 2 anime. CloverWorks also collaborated with WIT Studio on the 2022 Spy x Family anime, which had a split-cour Spy x Family Part 2 that was released later.
The main staff making the Akebi’s Sailor Uniform Season 2 anime hasn’t been announced yet.
For the first season, the anime project was helmed by director Miyuki Kuroki (assistant director for the Fate/Grand Order 2021 movie and 2019 TV show). Writer Rino Yamazaki (episode scriptwriter for Darling in the FranXX) handled the scripts and series composition.
Masato Anno (Slow Start), Taishi Kawakami (various animation roles for Darling in the FranXX), and Megumi Kouno (Fate/Grand Order creature character design) were all character designers and chief animation directors for the project. Composer Kana Utakane (Mieruko-chan, Re-Main) created the music.
The Akebi’s Sailor Uniform Season 2 OP (opening) and ED (ending) theme song music hasn’t been announced yet.
For the first season, the Akebi’s Sailor Uniform OP “The First Moment (Hajimari no Setsuna)” was performed by all 16 main Japanese voice actors, while the ED “Baton” was performed by Manatsu Murakami.
The first season’s finale, Akebi’s Sailor Uniform Episode 12, was released on March 26, 2022.
This article provides everything that is known about Akebi’s Sailor Uniform Season 2 (Akebi-chan no Sailor-fuku Season 2 / Akebi-chan Season 2) and all related news. As such, this article will be updated over time with news, rumors, and analysis. Meanwhile, let’s delve down into what is known for certain.
As of the last update, Studio CloverWorks, Aniplex, or any company related to the production of the anime has not officially confirmed the Akebi’s Sailor Uniform Season 2 release date. Nor has the production of an Akebi-chan Season 2 sequel been announced.
Once the news is officially confirmed, this article will be updated with the relevant information.
In the meantime, it’s impossible to speculate about when, or if, the Akebi-chan no Sailor-fuku Season 2 release date will occur in the future.
The Akebi’s Sailor Uniform reviews have been solid but not great. CloverWorks’ animation quality and penchant for storytelling cannot be denied. The slice-of-life story was innocently delightful while providing the occasional chuckle.
It makes for a rather stunning contrast to My Dress-Up Darling (Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru), which was also released in the same time frame as the Akebi-chan anime. Both started with the premise of a character wanting to sew their own outfit, but the overall tone of the storytelling approach is completely different, which appeals to different audiences.
While the Akebi-chan anime was good, the story never made the jump into greatness since it did nothing to stand out from the ever-growing anime crowd. The anime definitely developed some yuri undertones early on but it wasn’t clearly going the yuri route enough to catch the attention of that crowd.
Rather than an origin story for a future Komichi-the-idol, the first season was simply wholesome CGDCT (cute girls doing cute things) without having to worry about philosophy, story arcs, or drama-filled conflicts. For some anime fans, that’s a positive, while for others it’s a negative.
Unfortunately for the Akebi-chan anime, the boost to the Akebi-chan manga sales in Japan was apparently minimal at best. Back in December 2021, the manga had 700,000 copies in circulation for Volumes 1 through 8. The series peaked in first-month sales with Volume 3 (notably, the cover art had Komichi in a bikini), with more recent volumes having about half the sales level in 2021.
There were no follow-up reports of the Akebi anime causing the manga to increase in sales. By contrast, the My Dress-Up Darling manga sold millions in the same time frame and was number 7 in Oricon’s Top 20 by Series for February 2022.
Even worse, the Akebi anime rarely made Crunchyroll’s Top 20 popular anime. That’s not a good sign since international streaming revenue influences the decision-making of anime production committees the most out of any factor.
As such, it seems reasonable to predict that they won’t have Akebi’s Sailor Uniform Season 2 renewed, but it would be nice to be wrong.
In Winter 2022, the Akebi’s Sailor Uniform Season 1 anime was streaming on Crunchyroll, Funimation, and VRV (not Netflix USA, Hulu, or Amazon Prime Video).
Crunchyroll and Funimation both were streaming the English dubbed version. Here is the Akebi’s Sailor Uniform dub cast:
Funimation and Crunchyroll’s Akebi’s Sailor Uniform English dub release date was on January 29, 2022.
Presumably, the Akebi’s Sailor Uniform Season 2 English dub will be announced in the future if the second season is greenlit for production.
The story for the anime TV series is based on the Akebi’s Sailor Uniform (Akebi-chan no Serafuku) manga written and illustrated by Hiro. The creator is also the illustrator of Super Cub, which finished its story in March 2022 with light novel Volume 8.
Serialized in Shueisha’s Tonari no Young Jump online magazine since August 2016, the Akebi manga was up to Volume 9 as of October 19, 2021. When the anime’s first season finished in March 2022, the manga was up to Chapter 58 (there was also a Chapter 0 prologue that’s the anime’s opening scene).
Unfortunately, no North American publisher has announced the Akebi’s Sailor Uniform manga’s English translation. However, there are fan translation projects that keep up with the latest Japanese chapters.
One aspect that jumped out immediately with the anime adaptation is that it actually toned down the fan service. While certain scenes were in both versions, the manga definitely had blush-worthy details that the anime only referenced rather than shown.
Manga purists typically prefer that an anime adaptation stick to the plot and adapt each chapter in a straightforward fashion. In this case, the Akebi anime definitely rearranged story elements starting with Episode 3 while introducing some anime original scenes, but CloverWorks did it so well that no one is complaining.
The biggest change was that the anime gave screentime to other girls’ story arcs before circling back to an early manga story arc about Komichi inviting the blonde twin-tails Erika Kizaki over to her house. Due to shifting the timeline around, the Erika fishing story arc of Chapters 8, 12, and 13 was adapted by Episode 6.
Pulling together those separated chapters meant that Erika was introduced by the anime early on as an apparent first best friend only for Erika to go MIA for multiple episodes. Still, rearranging the story was better than the manga which had the two girls promise to hang out early on only to push off the big event for multiple chapters, which was fairly odd in retrospect.
Episode 9 essentially combined story elements from other chapters in order to create an anime original episode that bridged the gap between Chapters 16 and 17. It was essentially a teaser episode of future chapter 24 involving swimsuits and rain at a river combined with parts of a future pool chapter. But since Episode 9 doesn’t completely replace the future Tokyo trip (which was foreshadowed by an early comment) the chapters can still be adapted by Akebi-chan Season 2 (or, an OVA episode).
The first half of Episode 10 also expanded on the first several pages of a single chapter.
Despite shiftings things around to augment the storytelling of each individual episode, the pacing of the anime was not rushing through the source material, either. For example, Episode 1 adapted Chapters 0 through 2.
The swimming competition with Minakami Riri was based on Chapters 14 and 15, and the ending scene in Episode 8 where the summer uniform was introduced with a triumphant spin came from Chapter 16. Episodes 10 through 12 then focused on events surrounding the summer sports festival.
All in all, it’s predicted that the ending of the first season’s finale, Akebi-chan Episode 12, will correspond to manga Volume 4: Chapter 23.
The good news is that there is plenty of source material for making Akebi’s Sailor Uniform Season 2. Better yet, manga readers can read ahead of the anime by jumping straight to manga Chapter 24.
Akebi’s Sailor Uniform Season 2 will have Komichi and her friends exchanging summer uniforms for yukata and swimsuits! The summer colors are packed with friendship, hard work… festivals!
The girls will be involved in a gymnastics festival. Will they be able to snatch victory?
Komichi will also be enjoying the sea on a beach trip!
It’s a little lonely to leave her friends, but an important time to spend with her family is coming…
Unfortunately, anime fans will have to wait until the Akebi’s Sailor Uniform Season 2 release date to watch what happens next. Stay tuned!
