Spotify’s Batman Unburied podcast has been renewed for a second season.

Spotify, Warner Bros. and DC have announced that Batman Unburied will return for a second season. The announcement was made at Spotify’s “Dive Into The Batman Audio Universe” panel, moderated by Spotify’s Chief Content and Ads Business Officer Dawn Ostroff, at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.

Batman Unburied premiered on Spotify on May 3. The series quickly rose to the top of Spotify’s global charts and sat at the number one spot in 13 markets for over two weeks. Starring Black Panther‘s Winston Duke as Bruce Wayne/Batman, the series was created and executive produced by David S. Goyer. The first ten-episode season sees Bruce Wayne working as a forensic pathologist at Gotham Hospital, which is owned by his father. Thomas and Martha Wayne are still alive in the initial episodes of Batman Unburied, but later installments reveal that Bruce is dealing with a fractured mental state and that not everything is as it seems.

As Bruce works through issues of guilt and perceived disapproval from his father, he’s also tasked himself with tracking down and stopping a dangerous new serial killer who has emerged in Gotham City, the Harvester (voiced by Sam Witwatersrand). The first season of Batman Unburied also features vocal acting from Gina Rodriguez, Jason Isaacs, Hasan Minhaj, Lance Reddick Ashely Burch and John Rhys-Davies.

“Understanding there was a lot of intention placed in the conversation that they wanted to have with the audience, was incredible,” Duke said of Goyer’s vision for the series during the panel. “To have Goyer tell me that one of his stipulations was that ‘I want to have a Black Batman, I wanted to have a Black Batman and won’t do it without it.’ And then the idea of Poison Ivy is a character that’s messing with our perception of the truth, and that to some degree that is the monster of today. We feel that we’re at war with perceptions of the truth – what’s real info vs. fake info, what is artifice vs. reality – that’s what’s being messed with here. And, the idea that our villains aren’t the monsters, they’re not vampires and ghouls and goblins, they’re systems that are impacting our sensibilities and how we perceive things and make decisions.”

The second season of Batman Unburied does not yet have a release date. The first season is available on Spotify.
