Bleach is a Japanese original manga series written and illustrated by Tite Kubo. The anime series was based on the manga and produced by Studio Pierrot and directed by Noriyuki Abe. From October 2004 to March 2012, the anime series aired on TV Tokyo and lasted for 366 episodes. The anime featured original storylines and characters that were not found in the original manga.

In March 2006, Viz Media obtained foreign television and home video distribution rights to the Bleach anime, which was broadcast in the United States on Adult Swim from September 2006 to November 2014.

The story centers on a hothead teenager named Ichigo Kurosaki, who through a strange twist of fate ends up obtaining the powers of a Soul Reaper (a personification of death similar to the Grim Reaper) from a girl, named Rukia Kuchiki. With his newfound powers came the responsibility of defending humans from evil spirits called Hallows and guiding departed souls to the afterlife. Ichigo ends up having several adventures in his hometown fighting Hallows and then later in a place called Soul Society where he’s forced to battle other Soul Reapers.
