Everyone Should Give Assassin’s Creed Syndicate a Second Chance – Including Ubisoft

Many fans believe that when Assassin’s Creed Syndicate first came out, it was unfairly scrutinized. Now’s the perfect time to give it a second chance.

When it was first released in 2015 as the ninth major installment in the Assassin’s Creed series, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate was largely ignored by fans. Many of those who did play Assassin’s Creed Syndicate believe that the game was unfairly scrutinized due to a number of factors and still consider it to be a solid entry in the series.

Unfortunately, that small, devoted subset of fans who love Syndicate hasn’t been enough for the development team at Ubisoft, and Syndicate has fallen a bit to the wayside, with some accessibility issues even seeming to go ignored by Ubisoft themselves. However, now might be the perfect time for both the Assassin’s Creed audience and the developers at Ubisoft to come together and give Assassin’s Creed Syndicate the second chance it deserves.

The story of Assassin’s Creed Syndicate‘s rocky release actually started with the release of Assassin’s Creed Unity a year earlier. Many might still remember the controversy surrounding Unity when it first came out. Among other issues, Unity‘s day one bugs and glitches were infamously so extreme and widespread that many considered the game to be unfinished at launch.

Though serious effort was made to fix these bugs and glitches as fast as possible, for many, the damage was already done. Ever since the divisive entry of Assassin’s Creed III, many fans believed the series had been dropping in quality, and since Ubisoft had been churning out yearly releases for a while, a large portion of fans had grown fatigued with the series. Due to that fatigue, when Assassin’s Creed Syndicate arrived a year later, a lot of players decided to skip over it completely.

The backlash of Unity, combined with the poor sales of Syndicate, were large factors in Ubisoft’s decision to step back and develop the soft reboot of Assassin’s Creed Origins in 2017, eventually leading to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, the most successful game in the franchise to date.

Assassin’s Creed Origins shook up the formula of the franchise, creating a beautiful setting that fans still want to revisit, and it was perhaps exactly what the series needed at that time. Yet many fans are now hoping that the next step will be some sort of return to the more classic experience of the series. Whether Ubisoft will go that way remains to be seen, though recent leaks for the next game do seem to claim a more linear style. Regardless, for now, many fans might not realize that Assassin’s Creed Syndicate might be exactly what they’re looking for.

The classic action stealth experience is there in Syndicate, though it still has enough of a touch of modernity that’s still fresh seven years later. Glitches and bugs in Syndicate were minimal compared to Unity, even at launch, and the story is arguably one of the most grounded and thrilling in the series and has strong ties to Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, a fan favorite. There’s even an incredibly entertaining Jack the Ripper DLC pack, as well. Admittedly, the story of Syndicate does end on somewhat of a cliffhanger that was never resolved when the series shifted gears to Origins, but as Assassin’s Creed Valhalla has now answered some of the more pressing questions left behind, now could be the perfect time to reexperience the game.

Despite all the problems and controversy surrounding Assassin’s Creed Unity when it first launched, it has recently received a second chance from fans. Through word of mouth, many have discovered it’s a fantastic game with all the bugs now fixed. Who’s to say that the same thing couldn’t happen with Assassin’s Creed Syndicate?

Currently, the only thing that seems to be standing in the way of a revival for Syndicate is that PlayStation 5 players would have trouble accessing the game, as a serious glitch causes the screen to continuously flicker. Unfortunately, Ubisoft seems to be doing very little about it at this time. If PS5 players want to play Syndicate, they’ll likely have to dust off a PS4 or access it on an Xbox or PC if they can, at least until this glitch is resolved. However, a renewed interest from fans might be just what Ubisoft needs to fix or maybe even remaster Assassin’s Creed Syndicate one day.
