GOBLIN SLAYER! debuted back in February 15, 2016 as a light novel series that is still ongoing, with 15 volumes published as of April 2022. Over the years, GOBLIN SLAYER! has proven itself to be quite controversial but also very popular. The series was adapted into an anime in 2018, followed by an anime movie in 2020, and here is everything you need to know about its upcoming second season.
GOBLIN SLAYER! season two has been officially confirmed on January 31, 2021. This was the first piece of information about the show since its debut back in 2018. At this moment, nothing is known about the upcoming second season; we have received a visual confirming its release and it is speculated that the season might air in 2023.
The rest of this article is going to bring you all the known and unknown information related to the upcoming season two of GOBLIN SLAYER!. You’re going to find out about its potential release date, whether there is a trailer, what the story could be about, and much more about this very popular anime series.
At this moment, GOBLIN SLAYER! consists of one anime season, which ran from October 7, 2018 to December 30, 2018, consisting of a total of 12 episodes, and an anime movie released on February 1, 2020. These episodes have adapted the complete Volume 1 of the light novel, a portion of Volume 2, and a short episode from Volume 4, while the movie was based on Volume 5; Volume 3 has not been adapted in any form.
Knowing that the series has, so far, adapted only two and a half light novel volume, we cannot deny that there is a lot of new material adapt, although we do not know whether the producers are going to go back, or simply continue from Volume 6 onwards. Be that as it may, the continuance wasn’t really confirmed at the time and we had to wait for some information to hit us for a year.
Why is that, you’re wondering? Well, GOBLIN SLAYER! was never such a massive hit as Demon Slayer or Jujutsu Kaisen, which aired around the same time. The series’ fandom was small, but the fans are pretty devoted and that is why the producers were so slow to announce any plans for future seasons of the show.
Still, on January 31, 2021, during the GA Fes 2021, it was confirmed that GOBLIN SLAYER! would indeed be coming back for a second season, but aside from a visual teaser (below, left image), no additional information has been released. This hasn’t, unfortunately, changed since that moment as even today, we don’t have any information about the upcoming season.
The announcement has definitely made a lot of fans happy, but unfortunately, it was just a mere announcement that has us waiting for more. Taking all of this into account, the second season of GOBLIN SLAYER! is probably very close and will quite probably premiere in 2023; seems a bit too early, while 2024 doesn’t seem likely in any aspect.
Now that we have presented you with all the information about season two of GOBLIN SLAYER!, you’ve probably concluded by yourselves that it is still too early for a proper trailer for the upcoming season, meaning that there is none at this moment.
And while the season has been announced over a year ago, we still have no information about its current production status nor a potential release date, so we’ll just have to wait for a release window for the second season go have a more precise window for the trailer’s release.
As we have said, GOBLIN SLAYER! will definitely come back very soon, but it seems that it is still too early in the production for a trailer. The whole series has been extremely popular and it did not surprise us that it had been renewed for a new season. Still, as of this moment, we still don’t have any official information on the new season’s release date, so we’ll have to wait a bit for the trailer to appear.
The only things we have are an announcement trailer, and two teaser visuals, an older one released a year ago, and a recently released one. Here is the announcement video:
And as for the teaser visuals, you can also check them out here:
Taking into account everything we’ve said, a trailer for GOBLIN SLAYER! season two will probably appear sometime during this year. With a 2023 premiere looking likely, the trailer is bound to appear in the following months.
At this moment, we do not know which parts of the light novel series are going to be adapted in Season 2. Namely, the adaptation schedule for GOBLIN SLAYER! was quite hectic, with the first anime season combining elements from Volume 1, part of Volume 2 and a short segment of Volume 4; the movie has adapted Volume 5 of the light novel series.
Now, whether Season 2 is going to come back to the unadapted parts of Volumes 2-4 or continue with Volume 6 remains a mystery at this time. In this section, we are going to recap the first season of the anime.
The Priestess, old enough to leave the Temple where she grew up, goes to the Adventurers’ Guild to accomplish her first quest: as a novice of porcelain rank, she is recruited by a team of novices like her to exterminate a cavernous lair of goblins who are said to have attacked humans and abducted young girls.
The Goblin Slayer is a high-ranking (silver) solitary adventurer living on a farm in a small remote village with Cow Girl, his childhood friend, and known within the Guild to only complete quests for the extermination of Goblins. The Priestess, who was saved by him during his first quest and chose to team up with the Goblin Slayer on his missions, learns by his side the profession of an adventurer but also, what makes his reputation.
A team of heterogeneous adventurers (a High Elf, a Dwarf and a Lizardman) and of the same rank as him, having heard his exploits sung by a bard, go to the Adventurers’ Guild to meet the Goblin Slayer, and recruit him for a quest that turns out to be up his alley.
Arriving in the ruins abandoned by Humans, the team led by the Goblin Slayer and relying on his wise expertise, storms the particularly developed lair of Goblins that they are supposed to exterminate: the Archer Elf, dreaming of adventures and too presumptuous, learns by his side to really know the “Orcbolg”, but also his sworn enemies and what they are capable of.
The Goblin Slayer is sponsored in person by the Archbishop, a former heroine of gold rank also known by the nickname of “Virgin of the Sword” and revered by the Priestess, for a mission to the City of Waters; the Archer Elf, the Dwarf Shaman and the Lizard Priest, who are also offered the quest by the person concerned, willingly join them in exterminating the Goblins who have visibly invested the ancient undergrounds of the city.
After a successful first assault, however, the Goblin Slayer came to the conclusion that the Gobelins they had encountered were not ordinary, and therefore made arrangements for their next descent into the underground. At the same time, the Priestess, who shares a moment of intimacy with the Virgin with the Sword, learns that she also has a past history with the Goblins.
Just saved by the magic of the Priestess and the Virgin with the Sword, who in turn gets closer to him, the Goblin Slayer is joined by his companions for their second assault, which had little success and nearly cost him his life. Having yet to recover and repair his equipment, he is temporarily left on the surface by the Elven Archer, the Dwarf Shaman and the Lizard Priest who return to explore the subterrain in anticipation of their next descent together.
Facing the strange mirror kept in a dead-end room by the “Giant Eye”, which they have just eliminated thanks to a new Goblin Slayer ploy, the group of adventurers discover that it is of a Magic Portal overlooking another world inhabited by Goblins with more advanced civilization than those they usually encounter in theirs, confirming the suspicions of the Goblin Slayer.
After completing the quest for the Virgin with the Sword and getting rid of the Portal, the Goblin Slayer returned to recover in his village as well as in his daily life: accompanying Cow Girl back to town to recover his equipment for repair, he goes through the Guild twice a day to see if Goblin extermination quests are available to him.
In his second passage, after retrieving his armor and observing colleagues training novices, he and his relatives all join him by chance: he finds himself embarked by the Elven Archer at an impromptu meal with their adventurous companions, who talk about a Guild project that offers a future perspective to retired adventurers.
The many Goblin footsteps he found around the farm during his usual round meant only one thing to the Goblin Slayer: a large horde of Goblins was nearby. These will again storm his village and massacre its inhabitants, as on that one fated night when he was a child. With Cow Girl refusing to leave their home, and having no other choice at hand to prevent what will inevitably happen, he goes to the Guild to beg for the collective help of all available adventurers but is initially denied.
However, with the influence of his closest colleagues, the support of his companions as well as the indirect help of the Hostess and the employees of the Guild, the Goblin Slayer manages to recruit enough adventurers to design a viable plan and to stand firm to receive the important organized horde of Goblins, who led by a Baron and according to his predictions attacked his village the following night.
The battle between the adventurers of the Guild and the Goblins continues on the plains separating the village from the forest: while his colleagues anticipate – thanks to his expertise as well as his planning – the various waves of assault and exterminate them, the Goblin Slayer, who had planned everything, took care of their lair and barred the road of their Baron, whom he faced in person.
In the film, the Goblin Slayer and his group of adventurers are sponsored via the Virgin with the Sword by nobles to follow in the footsteps of their daughter, who left the family home to become an adventurer and went with her own company to the Snowy Mountains on a quest to exterminate the Goblins: she still hasn’t returned.
The main cast of GOBLIN SLAYER! won’t be going through many important changes, at least not as far as we know. Some new characters will be introduced, that is certain, but the main cast will remain – for the most part – unchanged until the very end (of the first series, at least). This is why we think that the main voice cast, since that is an unwritten rule in modern-day anime adaptations, will return for the second season, but also for all potential future seasons.
We don’t have confirmation of that so we’ll have to wait a bit for it to be official, but we assume that most of the names on the list below will return in future seasons of GOBLIN SLAYER!:
The first season of GOBLIN SLAYER! was available on Crunchyroll (in subbed format) and Funimation (in dubbed format). Since these two services usually stream anime, there is no doubt that they will offer the second season for their viewers as well. We just don’t know whether the dub will be released simultaneously or not, but we think that it will.
And while it certainly might be too early to discuss a potential third season of GOBLIN SLAYER!, since we don’t even know officially when the second season is going to air (now that we know that it is in the works), but there are some great indicators that GOBLIN SLAYER! will, indeed, return even after the upcoming second season.
Namely, GOBLIN SLAYER! is still nowhere near its completion (neither the light novels, nor the manga), and the upcoming season probably won’t have a large number of episodes, like the first one, which means that the producers have more space for new seasons, as you don’t really want to rush such shows.
Seeing how GOBLIN SLAYER! maintains a consistent level of popularity in Japan is and how good it is doing, as well as taking into consideration the fact that the anime hasn’t adapted the whole story (the series is still ongoing, so there’ll be a lot of new material to adapt, alongside the already-existing one that has not been adapted yet), we know that the upcoming second season won’t wrap things up, meaning that a third season is looking very good.
Still, we’ll have to wait for some official news to be sure.
