Gotham Knights is Even Bigger than Arkham Knight In One Major Way

The developers behind Gotham Knights say that the version of Gotham City they’ve created is the largest and “most layered” ever seen in a video game.

Executive producer Fleur Marty and game director Geoff Ellenor recently revealed new details about Gotham Knights, claiming that it features the biggest version of Gotham City ever seen in a video game.

Game Informer asked the developers if the game world was as large as it seemed in the trailers. “It’s pretty big,” replied Ellenor. “I haven’t put one map over the other, but our Gotham is a big place. I tend to spend a lot of my Zoom calls on the Batcycle driving around Gotham. It is one of the fastest and most chill ways to move around the city. It feels like a big place.” Fleur then added, “For sure it’s the biggest version of Gotham that has been represented in video games. The most important thing for us is its density and verticality. It has lots of layers. The Batcycle is the long-range mode of transportation.”

In a recent interview with CBR, Ellenor again stressed the importance of that density and verticality. “Gotham, the city, is such a huge character in Gotham Knights. Our whole concept of Gotham was this crazy, layered city.” Ellenor added that they used those level design concepts to give different parts of Gotham a unique feel. “It has these layers where not everybody is having the same experience of what it’s like to live in Gotham City. This concept of a big, vertically layered city was with us very early on.”

Gotham Knights is an open-world, action RPG that lets gamers play as one of four powerful proteges of Batman — Red Hood, Robin, Batgirl or Nightwing. The story begins with the death of Batman and now the “Batman Family” must team up to keep Gotham safe. Up to four players can complete the game in co-op, a feature that required a lot of work for the developers, particularly when it came to story and dialogue. “When it comes to more of the story and banter between the characters, it was basically a lot of work for the narrative team,” said Marty, adding, “but it’s a fun thing to do and interesting.”

Another first for Gotham Knights is the inclusion of the “Court of Owls” as the game’s main antagonists, a secret society and organized crime group that was introduced to the Batman bestiary in 2011. The Court of Owls has never been depicted in a video game before, and game director Marty said they chose them largely for that reason. “Part of it is that we wanted our own thing, and there’s a lot of mystery in Batman games. [The Court of Owls] haven’t been explored in a game, so it made sense to take inspiration from [the comics.]”

Developed by WB Games Montréal and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Gotham Knights launches on Oct. 25 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
