The poster for HBO’s upcoming Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon features a menacing Rhaenyra Targaryen with an imposing companion.

HBO unveiled a new poster for its Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon that puts an especially intimidating Targaryen front and center.

The poster features the image of a massive dragon taking up nearly the entire background behind a set of stone steps lined with swords. In the middle of it all, Emma D’Arcy’s Rhaenyra Targaryen stands firm with an eerie, unwavering gaze. While the identity of the gigantic mythical beast is unknown, fans presume it to be her companion Syrax.

House of the Dragon serves as both a prequel and spinoff to the hit fantasy series Game of Thrones. The upcoming show is based on George R.R. Martin’s 2018 novel Fire & Blood, which takes place 200 years before the events of the main series and follows the beginning of the end of House Targaryen. Character posters for House of the Dragon have given fans a glimpse of the main cast, confirming that D’Arcy’s Princess Rhaenyra will be joined by Paddy Considine as King Viserys I Targaryen, and Doctor Who icon Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen.

Martin previously confirmed that the series had wrapped filming while also praising the production. Martin said, “Yes, all ten episodes. I have seen rough cuts of a few of them, and I’m loving them.” The author continued on to say that while plenty of work is still needed before the series premieres, he’s satisfied with what the creative team has managed to accomplish.

The series is already facing stiff competition in the form of Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series which is slated to arrive on Sept. 2, just weeks after House of the Dragon premieres on HBO. Martin himself has weighed in on the budding rivalry, saying, “If they win six Emmys, and I hope they do, I hope we win seven.”

Despite not having premiered yet, House of the Dragon Season 2 is reportedly already underway. HBO and HBO Max Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys commented on the process of producing shows for the networks, noting how the Game of Thrones spinoff was a different circumstance. “Typically speaking, I like to take an approach where we will talk about what a second season might look like and talk about scripts. But we tend to like to see how a show performs,” Bloys said.

House of the Dragon premieres on HBO and HBO Max on Aug. 21.
