After its emotional Season 2 finale, HBO Max’s Hacks has been renewed for a third season. What could fans expect from the comedy in Season 3?
The following contains spoilers for Hacks Season 2, Episode 8, “The One, The Only,” which premiered Thursday, June 2 on HBO Max.
HBO Max’s Hacks has officially been renewed for a third season, and it will likely continue to place Deborah Vance and Ava Daniels’ complicated relationship at the show’s center. Season 2 saw Ava dealing with the fallout of sending out an incindiary email about Deborah, including Deborah suing her in retaliation. By season’s end, they were finally on good terms again, but the Season 2 finale naturally complicated things between the two of them once more.
Ava felt horrible after betraying Deborah, and she spent the entire season making up for it. By the last episode, she had completely turned things around. She gave up a writing credit on Deborah’s special and made the choice to be at Deborah’s taping over taking a potential gig for an up-and-coming show. Furthermore, when Deborah let Ava go to the gig, Ava still chose to leave early so that she could attend the taping. Deborah began to understand the effect she had on Ava — and she fired her, clearly setting up Hacks‘ third season.
When Deborah chose to keep Ava around even after she found out about the email, it seemed as though she would never fire Ava. She very clearly cared a lot about Ava and greatly appreciated her sense of humor. However, this connection is what led to Deborah dismissing Ava; she’s determined to give her some space so that Ava can grow her career on her own. Deborah is also becoming successful again after a long time as an underdog, but the success might not feel as rewarding without Ava, who helped make it possible.
Season 3 will likely show both women missing each other and struggling to function without each other. Ava may not be content writing for a TV show and she’ll want to work with someone like Deborah who matches her sense of humor. Deborah, on the other hand, is going to remember why she loved collaborating with Ava so much. Even though Deborah fired Ava for her own good, she is probably going to deeply regret her decision. Deborah has also dropped the lawsuit, so the door is open for the two of them to see each other again.
Hacks Season 3 will give Deborah and Ava the chance to exist as separate characters away from each other, so the audience will be able to get to know them better individually. The other characters around them will each be dealing with their own issues as well, giving the HBO Max series plenty of subplots to pursue outside of Deborah and Ava’s journeys.
Season 2 revealed that DJ is getting closer to becoming a parent, and she’s worried that she won’t be a good one. Marcus and Wilson have decided to become friends, but they will likely get back together at some point in Season 3. Jimmy and Kayla are no longer working for Latitude, so they will be on their own next season. If Hacks Season 3 is anything like Season 2, it will be an emotional and hilarious roller coaster ride.
Hacks Seasons 1 and 2 are available to stream on HBO Max.
