One of Krakoa’s most powerful mutants might be on the path to become a diety-level figure for the Marvel Universe.
The following contains spoilers for Immortal X-Men #3, now on sale from Marvel Comics
The X-Men have been amplified more than ever lately, with the early victories of Krakoa as a nation-state and galactic power-player in the Marvel Universe elevating them to new heights. But it turns out even the sky isn’t the limit for some mutants, and that one important modern figure could have big things in his future.
Immortal X-Men #3 (by Kieron Gillen, Lucas Weneck, Dijjo Lima, and VC’s Clayton Cowles) revealed that in one possible future for the X-Men, Exodus becomes the most powerful mutant in the universe. He may have even reached a level of power that could put him on the scale with actual gods.
Immortal X-Men #3 focuses largely on the possible timelines glimpsed by Destiny. In many of them, the X-Men’s mutant nation has fallen either to some form of outside assault or by internal strife (such as Magik or Mister Sinister turning on them). Ultimately, it appears one of the most successful timelines seen by Destiny stretched into the distant future. In this world, the mutants eventually grew to become something of a theological empire, spanning across the cosmos. Referred to as the eXpanse future, it appeared that in this timeline it was Exodus who became the universe’s most important mutant.
The Omega-Level Mutant has been a major wildcard over the years, with his unstable extremist views about human/mutant relations having positioned him as both a hero and a villain at various points. He now sits on the Quiet Council, and is a well-regarded believer in the cause of mutant growth and expansion. In the eXpanse timeline, he gets his wish, having seemingly ascended to a truly radical form. He moved through the galaxy in a flaming “starship the size of a star” designed like the Phoenix. This suggest in this timeline Exodus became a host to the Phoenix Force.
But “host” might be too strong of a word, it seemed to be completely under Exodus’ control. He has become massive, able to hold a regular starship in his palm. Reality seemed to shift around him, and a firey halo surrounds his head. Notably, his body even seems to sparkle with stars, similar to how Eternity and the power of Captain Universe can be perceived in physical form. This suggests that in this timeline, Exodus isn’t just an Omega-Level Mutant, but has become a major force of the cosmos itself. In effect, the ultimate believer of mutant potential has become more or less a God by embracing the kind of role he currently believes Hope will achieve.
The Mister Sinister of this timeline even suggests that trillions of followers are empowering Exodus through belief, truly turning the former crusader into a god. This likely plays into his ability to actually grow stronger thanks to his ability to feed off the belief of others. In effect, Exodus just proved that under the right circumstances, he can become a genuine deity-level figure, potentially even stepping beyond the limits of characters like Thor.
This may even be one of the best-case-scenarios for the X-Men, given the numerous dark timelines that are teased throughout the issue. Exodus becoming one of Marvel’s most powerful mutants shouldn’t be surprising, given the abilities the character has showcased in the present-day. But after untold centuries of growth, it’s possible that Exodus could become one of Marvel’s most powerful beings, period. This makes his prominence in the present-day all the more impactful and hints that he could be crucial to any victory the X-Men hope to gain for themselves in the long-run.
