Based on Hirohiko Araki’s manga of the same name, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure has inspired the creation of many popular memes. In addition to the “Oh, you’re approaching me?” meme, two of these include the “Araki forgot!” meme, which fans created in reference to the series’ many plot holes, and the “Yare Yare Daze” meme, a phrase often used by Jotaro and which roughly translates to “good grief” in English. As of December 2021, the JoJo manga has over 120 million copies in circulation, but the franchise’s prominence within meme culture is another valuable indicator of its popularity.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure was first serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1987. Its story begins in 19th Century England with the character Jonathan Joestar, a young aristocrat who finds himself pitted against Dio Brando, a low-born but ambitious young man who is taken in by Jonathan’s father after Dio’s own perishes. Dio Brando eventually comes across a stone Aztec mask with incredible supernatural powers that is in the possession and care of the Joestar family. Driven by the desire for power and supremacy over others, Dio utilizes the powers of the Aztec artifact to make himself immensely powerful. This begins a quest to stop Dio that continues through several generations of the Joestar family. Jotaro Kujo, the Joestar descedant depicted in the cosplay, is the hero of the series’ third arc, entitled Stardust Crusaders.
