New Thor: Love and Thunder images showcase Natalie Portman and Chris Hemsworth’s superhero physiques and their training for the Marvel Studios movie.
New Thor: Love and Thunder photos show off the mighty physique of the Thors as Natalie Portman opens up about her training regimen for the Marvel Studios film.
In preparation for the upcoming Love and Thunder-focused issue of Total Film, the magazine has released stills of Portman’s and Chris Hemsworth’s Thor characters, giving fans an up-close look at their impressive arm muscles. The images showcase Portman’s godly profile in her version of Thor’s sleeveless armor breastplate and leather armbands, while teasing Hemsworth’s transition from classic Viking garb to tight muscle tank tops.
Portman said that carrying the weight of this superhero mantle, she wanted Jane Foster to hold her own in the film’s intense action sequences. “I trained for a long time before and during, and I was doing the whole protein shakes [thing],” she explained. “It really helped prepare me for the level of action that we ended up doing.”
The actor credited the “incredible” stunt doubles for taking care of the more strenuous scenes but added that the cast was still required to do a great deal of endurance and hammer-wielding. “It was definitely helpful to be strong. To have that weight of the cape all day, you want to have some upper-body strength,” Portman revealed.
Despite Love and Thunder showcasing a drastically different version of the Jane that audiences first met in Thor, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige claimed there was only one detail the studio could take credit for in Portman’s on-screen transformation, and it was not Jane’s mighty arm muscles. “The only thing we assisted with was making the Mighty Thor a little bit taller,” he confirmed. “That was the only movie magic we used. Everything else was all her.”
Directed and written by Taika Waititi, Love and Thunder will be the fourth solo outing for the God of Thunder in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film will take place post Avengers: Infinity War and see Thor Odinson find peace in the vast galaxy of heroes while teaming up with Jane Foster, who has since found herself in possession of his iconic hammer. The two ex-lovers will have to band together to stop Gorr the God Butcher from eradicating all gods from existence.
In addition to Portman and Hemsworth, Marvel Studios’ newest superhero spectacle will feature the return of Waititi as Korg, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, and the Guardians of the Galaxy team. New additions to the ensemble include Christian Bale as Gorr and Russell Crowe as the Greek god Zeus. Additionally, Waititi hinted at more surprise celebrity cameos, with Matt Damon set to return to the franchise as his Loki lookalike.
Thor: Love and Thunder opens in theaters on July 8. The Love and Thunder-themed issue of Total Film hits newsstands Thursday, June 23.
