Marvel Studios Returns to SDCC, Kevin Feige Confirms

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirms that Marvel Studios will be at San Diego Comic-Con for the first time since 2019.

Next month, Marvel Studios makes its return to San Diego Comic-Con.

During a press conference for Thor: Love and Thunder, Marvel Studios president and Marvel Entertainment chief creative officer Kevin Feige confirmed that Marvel Studios would be present at SDCC 2022, marking the Disney-owned studio’s first appearance at the event since 2019. Feige’s confirmation debunks an earlier report claiming that Marvel Studios was planning to sit out Comic-Con for another year.

It was during Marvel Studios’ Hall H panel at SDCC in July 2019 that Feige announced a sizable portion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Four slate, including the films Eternals, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Love and Thunder and Black Widow, as well as the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision, Loki, What If…? and Hawkeye.

It was also at SDCC 2019 that Feige announced Marvel Studios’ film reboot of Blade, though later confirmed that the movie was not part of Phase Four. Later that year, at D23, Feige announced three more Disney+ shows that would be part of Phase Four: Moon Knight, the recently premiered Ms. Marvel and the fast-approaching She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.

Amid the onset of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the in-person SDCC 2020 event was canceled. It was replaced by a virtual alternative, Comic-Con@Home. However, Marvel Studios decided not to participate, instead opting to save its next batch of major announcements for Disney Investor Day 2020. Comic-Con@Home returned in July 2021, though the Feige-led studio once again opted to sit out the virtual convention. Not counting Comic-Con Special Edition, which was held in November 2021, SDCC 2022 marks the first in-person iteration of San Diego Comic-Con in three years.

It remains to be seen what Marvel Studios will have in store for this year’s SDCC. While many of the aforementioned projects have since come out, a few are still awaiting release, such as She-Hulk, Love and Thunder and Blade. The studio also already has a fairly stacked slate moving forward, including films like Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, The Marvels and Fantastic Four. That said, there are a number of film projects in development at Marvel Studios that fans are eagerly awaiting more information on, like Deadpool 3, Captain America 4, Shang-Chi 2 and Thunderbolts.

As far as Disney+ is concerned, other upcoming MCU projects include series like Secret Invasion, Ironheart, Armor Wars, Echo, Agatha: House of Harkness and Spider-Man: Freshman Year, as well as The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Once again, though, fans are waiting for more information on other small-screen projects like untitled Wakanda series, the untitled Daredevil reboot, the untitled (though reportedly Werewolf by Night-based) Halloween special and the newly-reported Wonder Man series.

San Diego Comic-Con 2022 will take place from Thursday, July 21 to Sunday, July 24.
