Marvel’s Avengers finally introduced the arrival of Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor, but shocked fans with a key character’s murder by a famed Thor villain.
Marvel’s Avengers didn’t just debut Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor in the game, but revealed she struck a deal with a famous villain to kill a central character from the comics.
A brand new trailer revealing the circumstances of Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor joining the Marvel’s Avengers roster teased several exciting details coming to the game. One of the biggest reveals was that of the multiverse, as we see Jane suffering from cancer while comforted by a one-armed Thor as she speaks of her timeline. Notably, this timeline saw her go up against Odin as he lost his mind after Thor left Asgard, leading to Jane striking a deal with perhaps Thor’s most famous adversary — Loki. While Mighty Thor faces Odin, the trickster appears and stabs the Allfather in the back, killing him before pushing Jane through a portal to Earth 616, where she finds herself among the team of Marvel’s Avengers.
In this timeline, Odin went mad after Thor went to Midgard and could no longer protect him from outside influences. This led to Odin locking away the Allmother and rooting out any betrayers in Asgard, eventually causing the destruction of the realm in fire and ash. When the Allfather proved too much for her to handle alone, she turned to Thor’s brother, Loki, for assistance. She made a deal with Loki to help her kill Odin but then attempted to renege on her half of the bargain. Loki responded by opening a portal and pushing her threw, transporting her to a new realm and into the midst of the current team of Marvel’s Avengers.
The trailer showcases several differences between this timeline and the one featured in Marvel’s Avengers, including a purple Hulk, different costumes for Iron Man, Captain America and Ms. Marvel, and an unknown woman who can apparently mirror image herself the way Loki does. Mighty Thor’s armor is considerably different from the comics, showcasing additions of fur and considerably more black than the almost solid silver she’s known for. It also appears that Loki might be king of the Jotun in this timeline, as he’s seen sitting on a throne on a frozen planet that could be the kingdom of the Ice Giants.
Marvel’s Avengers announced Jane Foster’s entrance to the game in April, seemingly timed for her live-action debut in Thor: Love and Thunder. Mighty Thor will be voiced by veteran actor Zehra Fazal, who’s worked on such projects as Lucifer, Young Justice and Apex Legends. This is the first major update to the game since developer Crystal Dynamics revealed that Marvel’s Avengers roadmap had been canceled or significantly altered to limit major updates, relying more on smaller additions to the game to keep things interesting.
Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor will appear as part of Patch 2.5 on June 28. Marvel’s Avengers is available now to play on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC.
