In the 26th issue of Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, it was revealed that Me and Roboco (Boku to Roboko) is getting an anime adaptation.
Me and Roboco is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Shuhei Miyazaki. Since July 6, 2020, the manga has been serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. The manga’s chapters have been collected into five tankobon volumes by Shueisha as of October 4, 2021.
The manga’s English version is published digitally simultaneously with its Japanese release by Shueisha’s MANGA Plus online service and Viz Media. In October, Viz Media started releasing the volumes digitally in English.
In 2021, Me and Roboco was nominated for the Best Printed Manga in the Next Manga Awards and placed 13th out of 50 manga nominees. Me and Roboco ranked 11th on the Nationwide Bookstore Employees’ Recommended Comics of 2022.
The manga’s first volume cover is a parody of the first Doraemon manga volume cover and was released on November 4, 2020.
The story is set in the distant future where every household owns maid robots known as OrderMaids that handle all of the household chores – cooking, cleaning, and laundry.
Bondo Taira is an average 10-year-old grade-schooler, who dreams of having a cute OrderMaid of his very own since his best friends Gachi Gorilla and Motsuo Kaneo are always talking about how great Kaneo’s OrderMaid Meico is.
Bondo manages to convince his mom to buy one, but when the OrderMaid arrives she’s nothing like he expected. Roboco is a self-proclaimed 17-year-old with a heavyset body structure and masculine legs.
(Funnily enough, when Roboco’s battery gets too low her body changes to a slim petite girl’s, but Bondo doesn’t find this out until much later.)
In Bondo’s book she is the opposite of cute and to top it all off she’s strangely powerful and clumsy. Bondo’s life starts to get a whole lot weirder as he’s forced to deal with Roboco’s antics, but as time passes she grows on Bondo to the point where when she’s not around he starts feeling lonely.
Gachi Gorilla is the older brother to his sister Ruri, and true to being an “older brother” is always looking out for his siblings. Gachi never hesitates to help his friends when they are in trouble.
Motsuo Kaneo may be the richest and smartest among his friends, but he holds their friendship in the highest regard. When his father wanted to enroll him in an overseas elementary school he refused and struck a deal with his dad – if he was able to become first in every national mock exam then he’s allowed to stay with his friends until he graduates.
Bondo has a crush on an 11-year-old girl named Madoka, who works part-time as an idol, and is always trying to impress her. But Madoka has a secret. When she gets very serious her appearance becomes butch.
