On May 24, 2019, Toho Animation released the film in Japan. Promare was nominated for Best Animated Feature – Independent at the 2019 Annecy International Animation Film Festival (47th Annie Awards), but sadly the film lost to Jeremy Clapin’s I Lost My Body.
The story revolves around two young men who are members of groups that are enemies. Lio, is the leader of a terrorist group known as Mad Burnish while Galo is a rookie member of a special firefighting group called Burning Rescue that knows how to deal with “living fire”.
The Burnish are a group of humans with the ability to create “living fire” and bend it to their will. 30 years ago, an alternate dimension collided with the one where Earth is located and caused the first appearance of the Burnish. Sentient alien beings from the alternate dimension became trapped on Earth. They became known as “Promare” and their one desire was to burn since that is how they thrived. The Promare assimilated with human hosts, and would obey their host’s will. Unfortunately, when someone’s desires get out of control this creates a Burnish.
Most of the Promare are living in the magma beneath the surface of the Earth and due to heightened Promare activity the world is going to be consumed in lava in the foreseeable future. Only a select few individuals in high places know about the impending doom of the Earth and are preparing ways to prevent its destruction, however, their methods are dubious at best.
The Burnish are hated by society out of fear for their destructive powers, and people find it easy to forget that Burnish were once human. Mad Burnish, who are seen as terrorists, only wish to give a message to those in power – that Burnish are people too. Lio shows Galo who the real enemy is as they fight intense battles against each other.
Before Galo met Lio he also hated and feared the Burnish, but his desire to protect everyone became his guiding light. Galo and Lio forge an unlikely alliance when they realize they have similar goals and Galo shows Lio a better way to fight for what he believes in that is less destructive. When Galo and Lio combine their wills and desires a new flame is born that is used to save the entire world.
