Moon Girl Is Not Interested In Being Spider-Man’s Friend

In Miles Morales: Spider-Man and Moon Girl #1, Marvel’s youngest genius decisively chooses to not become friends with the popular webslinger.

The following contains spoilers for Miles Morales: Spider-Man and Moon Girl #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

In Miles Morales: Spider-Man and Moon Girl #1 (by Mohale Mashigo, Ig Guara, Rachelle Rosenberg, and VC’s Travis Lanham), Lunella Lafayette / Moon Girl faces a massive challenge. Her best friend, a dinosaur named Devil Dinosaur with whom she shares a psychic link, has gone missing. To solve the mystery, Lunella teams up with Miles Morales / Spider-Man – and that is only the start of the collaborations she’s set to have on this adventure.

The story opens as a fairly typical Moon Girl adventure, with Moon Girl and Devil working together to fight petty crime, which in this case involves stopping a theft. When they have the thief cornered, he declares that “the play date is over” and he vanishes along with the massive T-Rex. Later, after hearing reports of a dinosaur being sighted in Brooklyn, Lunella uses her technological expertise to manipulate the school system and give her a temporary trial exchange program at Brooklyn Visions Academy.

Once in Brooklyn and with reduced supervision, Lunella dons her Moon Girl outfit and begins to hunt for her animal friend, promptly (literally) running into Miles Morales who is stopping a bank heist as Spider-Man. The two team up to defeat the robbers and encounter a dinosaur that subsequently explodes into a liquid goo. Together they fight the evildoers who were controlling the dinosaur and uncover a plan to clone Devil, though they are unable to find out who is directly responsible for the scheme. Ultimately, Lunella returns home to plan the search for her best friend.

While Moon Girl has teamed up with heroes before – notably during the Secret Warriors story arc – this issue sets the stage for a dedicated set of team-up stories as Lunella works alongside some of Marvel’s most famous heroes. This first story shows how this can lead to unique and exciting dynamics, as Lunella and Miles have a rapport with each other that stands out from most hero team-ups, with Lunella even telling Miles not to consider them friends based on their initial interactions.

As Marvel’s smartest hero at the ripe old age of nine, Lunella naturally lends herself to banter with her fellow superheroes. Not only was her wit on display throughout the story, but she even correctly identified Miles as Spider-Man prior to leaving Brooklyn Visions Academy. There’s a lot of potential in her having similar interactions with other Marvel superheroes. While her focus will be on saving her best friend from the mysterious dinonapper, she is more than capable of identifying and solving the problems of other heroes along the way.

Moon Girl’s hunt for Devil Dinosaur brings some unique storytelling potential to the character, separating her from her best friend and allowing her to act as a comedic foil to a variety of other Marvel heroes. It will be interesting to see what kinds of interactions she will have with other heroes as the story continues later this year in Avengers and Moon Girl #1.
