Natalie Portman’s Most Important Audience Gives Her Mighty Thor Their Seal of Approval

Thor: Love and Thunder star Natalie Portman explains her children’s reactions to her MCU return as both Jane Foster and the Mighty Thor.

Thor: Love and Thunder star and returning Marvel Cinematic Universe veteran Natalie Portman revealed that her children already approved of her becoming the Mighty Thor in the upcoming film.

While speaking to Total Film, Portman discussed the positive feedback she’s received from her children about her MCU role as the God of Thunder. “At this point in my career, I’m mainly trying to impress my kids by getting to put on a superhero costume and fly and fight bad guys and stuff,” Potman said. “They’re like, ‘Yes, Mom. Go!’ And I felt pretty good about that. They watched a rough cut with me, and they were like, ‘This is the best thing ever! Can you just do this forever, and not do anything else? Can you just make Marvel movies from now on?'”

A synopsis for Love and Thunder confirmed that Portman’s character Jane Foster would return in the film as the Mighty Thor, which stated that Jane now “inexplicably wields [the original Thor’s] magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor,” much to the God of Thunder’s surprise. The fourth Thor film will see Jane Foster join Thor, Valkyrie and Korg as they attempt to stop the villainous Gorr the God Butcher. The synopsis, though, doesn’t reveal how Jane came to wield Mjolnir nor how the hammer was put back together after being destroyed in Thor: Ragnorok.

Prior to Portman’s statements, Love and Thunder‘s director and co-writer Taika Waititi revealed just how faithful the movie will be to the original Marvel Comcis storyline which saw Jane become the new Thor. “We stick pretty closely to Jane’s storyline, and what happened to Jane… because that was such an influence on the film,” said Waititi. “We’re trying to take the best parts of that.” Tying into this, a piece of tie-in merchandise supposedly spoiled the fact that, like in the storyline, Jane will be battling cancer in the film.

Waititi also stated that he didn’t think of the idea for Portman’s return to the MCU until it was time to work on Love and Thunder‘s story. “I was writing and it was like, ‘Wouldn’t it be kind of cool to bring Jane back into the storyline?'” he recalled. “You don’t want Natalie [Portman] coming back and playing that same character who’s walking around with science equipment.”

He continued, “You know, while Thor’s flying around, she’s left on Earth, tapping her foot going, ‘When’s he going to be back?’ That’s boring. You want her to be part of the adventure.” However, Waititi has confirmed that while Jane will wield Mjolnir in Love and Thunder, she will not be the MCU’s new Thor.

Directed by Taika Waititi, Thor: Love and Thunder opens in theaters on July 8.
