Nathan Fillion Says He’d Work with Joss Whedon Again ‘In a Second’

Firefly star Nathan Fillion speaks out in defense of the show’s creator Joss Whedon, despite accusations of abusive on-set behavior in other projects.

Following numerous allegations against Hollywood director and TV producer Joss Whedon, former Firefly star Nathan Fillion has spoken up to say that he would be ready and willing to work with Whedon again.

In an interview with the “Inside of You” podcast as reported by Variety, Fillion recounted his own experience acting in several of Whedon’s projects, including the short-lived cult sci-fi series Firefly. Contrasting the testimonies from cast and crew members of Justice League and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Fillion said, “I would work with Joss again in a second. I would work with him again in a second.” When asked how he would describe Whedon, he replied, “Funny. Self-deprecating. Incredibly talented. Maybe a little haunted? I mean, listen, by his own admission that guy’s a work in progress and I appreciate that.”

Fillion, who has gone on to star in many successful shows and movies including Castle and the ongoing police procedural The Rookie, played the lead character in Firefly, the spaceship captain Malcolm Reynolds. He also appeared in several of Whedon’s other productions, including Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and Much Ado About Nothing. Fillion said on the podcast that Firefly was “one of the best things that ever happened to me” and expressed interest in joining a reboot or revival of the series, but dismissed the idea of going forward without Whedon’s involvement.

In 2021, Whedon faced many accusations of misconduct and abuse during film and television productions, beginning with claims from Justice League star Ray Fisher, which led to an investigation from WarnerMedia. This was followed by a statement from Buffy and Angel actor Charisma Carpenter alleging that Whedon’s inappropriate behavior had begun much earlier in his career, and many of her co-stars came out with their own messages of support for Carpenter, with some also offering their own condemnations of Whedon.

After a period of silence, Whedon publicly responded to the allegations in a January 2022 interview, addressing many of the complaints about his conduct although denying specific incidents. Fillion referenced Whedon’s statements, saying, “I read that article, and nowhere in there at any point in time did he mention Firefly. I had an entirely – that was not my experience with that man.”

Although most of the cast and crew members who came forward with complaints about Whedon worked under him on either Justice League or Buffy the Vampire Slayer, there was also a report about a writer on Firefly being singled out and humiliated in front of colleagues in the writers’ room.
