Hi, what are you looking for?

Netflix Keanu Reeves’ BRZRKR anime will have comic creator Keanu voice the main character Berzerker

There is exciting news for fans of Keanu Reeves’ violent, bloody, action-adventure comic BRZRKR. (And no, we’re not talking about the manga Berserk but the names are uncannily similar!)

It has been announced that BRZRKR is getting a live-action film and follow-up anime series adaptation, which will be developed by Netflix. Reeves will produce and star in the film (no surprise there since he looks an awful lot like the immortal warrior hero in the comic) and voice the hero in the anime sequel.

In March 2022, Boom Studios released the first issue of the BRZRKR comic, and 12 issues have been released since then. BRZRKR is Reeves’ comic debut and he is co-writing the comic with author Matt Kindt, who is known for his work on Folklords, and Justice League of America. Ron Garney is the comic’s illustrator.

Fans are already going crazy on Twitter over the announcement that Reeves will finally become an anime character:

Exciting news! Netflix is developing a live action film AND follow-up anime series based on Keanu Reeves’ BRZRKR, a brutally epic saga about an immortal warrior’s 80,000 year fight through the ages. Reeves will produce and star in the film, and voice the anime.

The story follows an immortal berserker, who has lived 80,000 years and thus has tired of living. In the present day, he works for the US government in exchange for help discovering the secrets behind his immortality. His goal is to discover a way to kill him so that he can finally die.

If this story sounds familiar that’s probably because you’re thinking of Netflix’s The Old Guard, which was also inspired by a comic series. There hasn’t been an anime adaptation of The Old Guard yet but with this current trend of anime expansions on Netflix things are looking hopeful for anime otaku.

Reeves was able to raise nearly 2 million USD on the crowdfunding Kickstarter campaign for the comic (with a little help of his own, too) before the first issue hit the shelves. The comic has sold over 615,000 copies, making it almost as popular as Marvel’s Star Wars #1 2015 relaunch.

BRZRKR is not the only anime adaptation to keep an eye out for this year on Netflix. Netflix’s Army of the Dead movie will also receive an anime adaptation and prequel titled Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas sometime in 2022. The action-horror anime series was developed by Jay Olivia, who will be directing two or more of the series’ episodes. Working as executive producer and directing the series’ will be Zack Snyder, who will direct two of the series’ episodes. The series will have a total of 6 episodes.

Incredible voice actors and actresses for Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas anime:

Animated “anime” expansions like the one Netflix did for The Witcher in The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf are a great way to keep fans invested even after the main movies or series have debuted.
