New Mutants Gives a Classic X-Men Weapon a Massive Upgrade

A mutant icon finally got her hands back on her iconic Soulsword and its new upgrades have turned it into Marvel’s latest, greatest weapon.

The following contains major spoilers for New Mutants #26, available now from Marvel.

Illyana Rasputin/Magik has finally reclaimed her famous Soulsword, and it’s come with an astonishing upgrade.

New Mutants #26 sees Magik and her allies come face-to-face with the demon S’ym and his minions. When Magik’s older, future self offers the chance at single combat to S’ym, the demon quickly accepts. Considering he was the one to previously destroy Magik’s Soulsword — not to mention his newfound, Warlock-like Technarch abilities — S’ym is certain he will win once again. This time, however, the demon falls to his much more clever opponent. With his defeat, Magik’s iconic weapon is returned to her with its own Technarch form.

While Illyana herself had already been a part of the Marvel Universe for nearly a decade, her Soulsword wasn’t introduced until 1983’s Uncanny X-Men #171 by Chris Claremont and Walt Simonson. Initially, the Soulsword emerged during a fit of unexpected rage, one which very nearly saw Illyana end the life of fellow X-Men mainstay Kitty Pryde. As a manifestation of her own life force, the Soulsword has always been a font of unparalleled power in its respective realm. Over the years it has been wielded by the likes of Belasco, Kitty and even the eternally devout Nightcrawler, though it has always found its way back to its rightful owner.

First appearing in 1984’s New Mutants #18 by Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz, Warlock is a member of the alien Technarchy, a race of artificial intelligence given sprawling form. Originally believed to have given birth to the menacing Phalanx, it was eventually revealed that their respective origins came the other way around. Far from the more typically malevolent personas of his Technarch counterparts, Warlock has almost always been a kind, caring figure. Despite being all but incapable of communicating on its own, Warlock bonded to Doug Ramsey, aka Cypher, with whom it has formed a near-inseparable connection.

With its new Technarch form, the Soulsword will presumably be imbued with many if not all the same powers associated with them. These include shape-shifting and being able to infuse other matter with nanite enhancements, effectively making them indestructible. Combined with the Soulsword’s preexisting powers of teleportation and over the supernatural, the new version of it is poised to be more powerful than any before it.

New Mutants #26 is written by Vita Ayala and features art by Rod Reis and Jan Duursema, colors by Ruth Redmond and letters by VC’s Travis Lanham. The main cover art is provided by Leinil Francis Yu and Sunny Gho, with variant covers courtesy of Carmen Carnero, Alejandro Sanchez and Maria Wolf. New Mutants #26 is on sale now from Marvel.
