Noragami (“Stray God”) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Adachitoka (the collective pen name used by female manga artists Adachi and Tokashiki. Serialization began in December 2010 in the Kodansha Monthly Shōnen Magazine. The series has been collected in twenty-three tankōbon volumes (the Japanese term for “a book that is complete in itself and is not part of a series, though the manga industry uses it for volumes which may be in a series”) and it’s still ongoing. We will tell you something about Noragami, the trailer and season 3!
There is no official information as to when Noragami Season 3 will be released or would be released at all. But, there are rumors that we might watch the third season in late 2021, or 2022 at the most.
So let’s get into the detail of the Noragami series further in the article.
Noragami (literally translated as “Stray God”) is an anime television series (based on manga) created by Japanese animation studio “Bones” aired from January to March 2014, featuring 12 episodes. The second season of the anime Noragami, titled Noragami Aragoto, aired for 13 episodes between October 2015 and December 2015.
First of all, let’s learn something about the Noragami anime storyline.
Yato is a minor deity who describes himself as “The Delivery God,” and as such dreams of worshippers. He has, however, far from realizing his goals, as no single shrine has been erected in his name. Until his weapon partner becomes fed up with him, he spends his days doing odd jobs for five yen each.
The god’s fortune suddenly changes when a middle school girl, Hiyori Iki, allegedly saves him from a car accident and is assumed to have taken the hit for him. Remarkably, she survives, but her soul has been ripped away from her body, resulting in her demise. While she demands that Yato return her to normal, Hiyori decides to help him find a new partner, only after hearing that he needs one to do so.
Noragami Aragoto’s second season, which premiered in 2015, followed Yato on his quest to get one million followers. We learned in this second season that there are other gods who hold great power over the humans in the realm of gods, and in particular, the long-standing rivalry between the god of war, Bishamonten, and Yato.
Even though there is no official word on the renewal of the show, we have no way of predicting when/if the third season might come out.
Here are some facts that speak in favor of this popular anime series.
It looks like the cast and notable characters of Noragami are growing. As a result, Noragami has a perfectly balanced ensemble. This anime never fails to remind the audience of all the characters’ thoughts and feelings throughout the battles with supernatural creatures. When the weapons used in battle acquire a soul of their own, the weapons take on a distinct personality. In this anime, you will encounter gods who have their own moral compasses and are influenced by the values of society as a whole. With each character, there are a lot of interesting angles and considerable depth.
Another unique characteristic of Noragami is that its combatants possess weapons made out of the souls of deceased people, which are reincarnated as a sword, a piece of armor, or anything else. The people on this show are human and have weaknesses, doubts, and personal problems just like everyone else. Because of this, combat sequences contain much more than the two combatants simply looking at each other from separate vantage points. However, the actual fights are not lengthy affairs, but they are full of personality and thought-provoking moments.
This seems very impressive, doesn’t it? Let’s have a look at how it looks in numbers.
On MyAnimeList the series is scoring 7.99/10, with a popularity ranking of number 20, backed by 1.708,285 members.
On IMDb, Noragami has received a score of 7.9/10 by 12,282 users (made its place among the top-rated manga series in 2014) and on Crunchyroll, it received a score of 4.8/5 of 129 votes.
Also, Noragami was the 14th top-selling manga series in Japan during the first half of 2014.
The reason Noragami Season 3 is taking so long to be released is because of the outbreak of the pandemic, but things are on the mend. Because of this, fans are beginning to expect the third season, too. The worldwide interest in the anime series can be seen in the high-caliber positive reviews that prominent fans from various social media platforms have given it so far.
Despite no release date being announced, fans expect the movie to premiere shortly. The producers hinted that there will be a third season earlier in the series. As a result of the ongoing pandemic, the delay has occurred. Assuming everything proceeds according to plan, the anime will air a third season around the end of 2021, or 2022.
The fans are excitedly anticipating the third season, but they are also entertaining thoughts of what might occur next. At the beginning of the story, the protagonist enters the supernatural world as a major plot twist.
Yato’s character will also be interesting to track over time, as he develops and changes. For the most part, the third season is highly demanded, and show creators continue to drop clues about the premiere.
Most likely, Noragami Season 3 will put a lot of focus on Yato, showcasing his strong desire to become a powerful God of creation. His previous life will be a major focus of the series, especially in regards to his relationship with his father.
A trailer has not yet been released but based on the manga novel we can put together a basic summary of what season 3 will be about. We can’t wait for the next season to begin, as there are a number of interesting plot twists that will be unveiled.
To encourage you to watch it, expecting as well a new update about the sequel, we are going to introduce you to the anime series characters, who can possibly appear in season 3.
A third-year student named Fujisaki Kouto (also known as “Father”) is the main antagonist of Noragami. Father is a conjurer of Phantoms and is currently inhabited by the deity known as Yato and Nora.
Kouto is a very manipulative person, being amiable and quiet in the presence of “friends” and strangers, but vicious and sadistic under the pretense of it being for scientific reasons. He might harm or even kill another human to test his abilities. Hiyori states that he indirectly attacks others by damaging their precious ones. He is also known to be quite petty, such as when he informs Yato that he kissed Hiyori without any apparent reasons and is simply doing it for the sake of upsetting him.
She was once Yato’s shinki, and also his priestess. In addition to her names, such as Ebisu and Takemikazuchi, she is also frequently employed by Yato and “Father.”
Speaking of shinki, they are beings that deities use to perform a variety of tasks, changing into various items or weapons. In addition, they are also known as Regalias (in English). Sacred treasures, weapons, and tools are also types of Shinki.
Nora, at first, appears to be quite kind and gentle. From her perspective, Yato shows that he cares about her greatly and attempts to include her in his plans frequently, as she was once a human and she simply wanted to have a family who cared about her. That action, however, only fed her insatiable appetite for more, and as a result, she turned to crime.
As the series progresses, it is shown that she is both manipulative and vicious, wanting to kill Yukine and Hiyori as well.
One of the main antagonists of the Noragami series is named Rabō. There is very little known about him; only that he is another manifestation of Yatō, the God of Calamity. Awase Kagami, which was based on the spin-off manga of the same name, was where he made his animated debut, and later as an anime character in the TV series. Her name is Furuhime, and he has bound her as his Shinki, with the name given to his vessel, Reiki.
A person who appears cautious and careful appears to be Rabō. He determines the strength and abilities of his adversaries before getting involved in combat. He likes to make himself known, but only for a short time so that his target is unsettled. In addition, he is an extremely unfeeling person and kills humans, phantoms, and gods alike for payment or just out of anger.
In Japanese mythology, Kofuku is a Goddess of Poverty. In order to appear to be a genie of fortune, she uses the name “Kofuku Ebisu”.
It is said that Kofuku is friendly and mischievous, like Yato. known for being scatterbrained and who openly admits to liking to have fun (and sometimes cause chaos). She has a special relationship with Daikoku and treats him more like a best friend than a servant.
While Kofuku has a light and jovial side, he is also shown to have a serious side and is not afraid to intimidate and challenge others, even when they’re not who they claim to be.
One of the Seven Gods of Fortune’s is Bishamonten (also known as Vaisravana or Bishamon). It is a recognized fact that she is a goddess of war and warriors.
Goddess Bishamon is depicted as being quite charitable towards her servants, the Shinki. She accepts any spirit that wanders and is troubled, even if they are useless. After the tragedy in the past where she was unable to save her Shinki, Bishamon chooses to distance herself from her people, and as a result, they became more insecure and lonely.
In addition to these characters, we want to remind you of the rest of the Noragami anime cast.
The main female protagonist of the Noragami series is Hiyori Iki. When she saved Yato from an incoming bus as a young child, she acquired a mysterious ability, being able to leave her human body as a half-phantom, knowing as hanyou.
Hiyori is a girl who puts the needs of others above her own. Regardless of the consequences, she goes out of her way to help those in danger, including complete strangers. Her moral compass is clear, and she is not above pointing out when someone’s actions go against it. Hiyori is fiercely loyal to those she has faith in, and her emotions are never hidden.
One of the three main characters in the show, Yato, is also the god of malicious destruction. His position is that he is a god of both fortune and happiness and war as well, as opposed to being a God of Calamity and Depression. Yato’s dream is to become a well-known deity who is worshiped by everyone.
While he can be naughty, impolite, and sometimes unpredictable, Yato is always good-natured. To find out how badly he wants something, you just need to look at how upset everyone around him gets. In addition, he is rather immature and easily fooled from time to time. Yato is often in the habit of daydreaming about being a very successful God, with multiple worshipers, shrine attendants, and an extravagant lifestyle. He has Athazagoraphobia because if he were to be forgotten, he would cease to exist.
One of the three main characters, Yukine, is known as “the sound of snow.” His new Shinki form is two twin katanas of the same length, but they have a different design.
In the beginning, Yukine appears somewhat cold and unsympathetic. It is obvious that he is upset and annoyed because he was given the duty of being Yato’s weapon, and he wishes to be away from someone as unpleasant as Yato. People can’t see him well because of this, so Yukine takes advantage of it. In addition, because people cannot see him well, he also gets to take advantage of the situation by stealing money, clothes, and even helping to betray Hiyori. As Yukine is upset that he is dead, he feels entitled and ungrateful because he cannot make friends and learn what other students do.
One of the seven gods of fortune is Ebisu. He is the humorless god of fishing and commerce. He appears in the manga as the richest of the High Priest’s predecessors and has come to offer Yukine (who has been blessed with the regalia) to Yato for an absurd amount of money.
From the start, Ebisu appears unemotional, speaking in a neutral, polite, yet standoffish tone. He is resourceful and willing to do what it takes to achieve his goals, no matter how much it might hurt him; such as placing his health in jeopardy and visiting the underworld to achieve his goals.
On the outside, he might appear aloof and serious, but he’s also fun and silly.
Of course, these are not the only characters from the series. We wanted to leave you some space to discover some of them, on your own.
We have already mentioned that it is an unknown fact about the possible sequel of the Noragami anime series, so unfortunately there is no trailer that would tease you in any possible way.
Unless the anime made a profit, Noragami will not get a third season.
Kodansha is still putting out the Noragami manga volumes. Volume 10 is where the anime left off, and there is more story to be told.
Noragami Season 3 has 14 manga volumes to go along with it.
The first season of Noragami only sold 5,000 Blu-Ray copies in Japan. In addition to being released on Blu-ray, the first season of the anime was given a BD-Box, which managed to sell around 400 copies. The second season was a commercial failure, selling only 2,000 copies. In season two, Blu-Ray sales fell by 60 percent.
Although volume 22 of the Noragami manga sold about 48,000 copies in Japan, the numbers for volume 23 were approximately 45,000 copies. After two seasons, only about 50,000 copies were sold.
Despite everything, we hope we’ve interested you enough to watch this anime series (at least seasons 1 and 2) if you haven’t already. Of course, read the manga series as well. Maybe some final good news about the sequel will arrive in the meantime.
In our opinion: there is more than enough source material for several more seasons of Noragami anime, not just for Season No. 3.
We hope for the third season to come soon, which will bring benefits for everyone – creators, producers, and fans as well.
