Obi-Wan Kenobi Remixed the Sith Rule of Two – and A Franchise Stereotype

The fifth episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi remixed the Sith Role of Two and also, retooled a franchise stereotype to help Old Ben’s new mission.

The following contains spoilers for Obi-Wan KenobiSeason 1, Parts I-V, now available on Disney+.

One of the biggest mysteries in Obi-Wan Kenobi was how Reva, the Third Sister from Fortress Inquisitorious, came to be Darth Vader’s pseudo-apprentice. She even knew he was Anakin Skywalker, which had folks wondering if she was a youngling at the Jedi temple on Coruscant. If so, many were intrigued why she broke bad and helped kill in the name of the Empire.

Thankfully, the fifth episode of the series finally revealed everything between Reva and Vader. As expected, Reva was indeed tied to the Jedi program before Order 66. However, the series threw fans for a loop, remixing the Sith Role of Two and another franchise stereotype.

The Sith Rule of Two existed for so many lords and apprentices. Here, the juniors attempted to seize control by murdering their teachers. Darth Sidious/Palpatine did so to Plagueis, like many before him, and even Vader contemplated a way to kill his master and take power, as the comics and cartoons revealed.

Ironically, Reva tried to kill her master too, but it wasn’t about power. The show, instead, remixed it as a years-long quest for revenge. It turns out, Reva was a youngling during Order 66, who faked her death when Anakin cut down the kids at the temple. She hid amongst their cold, dead bodies, vowing to avenge them someday. She eventually became an Inquisitor, hoping to catch Vader off-guard and end him.

However, just like Palpatine sensed betrayal lingering, Vader knew what Reva’s mission was all along. He wounded and left her on Jabiim, gloating about her weakness and how easily predictable she was. To rub salt in the wounds, seeing as he had his Grand Inquisitor back, it felt like the Sith masters moving on to another apprentice — something which left Reva incensed.

As for the other franchise stereotype that got reworked, it had to do with temptation via the Force. Usually, it was used to lure folks to the Dark Side, as seen with the Emperor coaxing Anakin and Luke, as well as in how Snoke and Palpatine lured Ben Solo and then attempted to bring Rey in. Even Kylo Ren tried to woo Rey with it, hoping she’d give in and seize control of the galaxy.

Obi-Wan, though, begged Reva to come back to the light and remember her Jedi principles. He knew one less tyrant like her would save lives and her tortured soul. This eventually inspired her to attack Vader sooner rather than later; although, it did feel like Ben was using her as a pawn. Still, these were desperate times, and Ben had to use everything at his disposal to stop the Empire, even if it meant pushing Reva to fight her mentor. Ultimately, his temptation was for the greater good, all about liberation and salvation, which was worth the sacrifice.

The Season 1 finale of Obi-Wan Kenobi premieres June 22, on Disney+.

I’m a former Chemical Engineer. It was boring so I decided to write about things I love. On the geek side of things, I write about comics, cartoons, video games, television, movies and basically, all things nerdy. I also write about music in terms of punk, indie, hardcore and emo because well, they rock! If you’re bored by now, then you also don’t want to hear that I write for ESPN on the PR side of things. And yes, I’ve written sports for them too! Not bad for someone from the Caribbean, eh? To top all this off, I’ve scribed short films and documentaries, conceptualizing stories and scripts from a human interest and social justice perspective. Business-wise, I make big cheddar (not really) as a copywriter and digital strategist working with some of the top brands in the Latin America region. In closing, let me remind you that the geek shall inherit the Earth. Oh, FYI, I’d love to write the Gargoyles movie for Disney. YOLO. That said, I’m on Twitter @RenaldoMatadeen. So holler.
