Obi-Wan Kenobi’s New Order 66 Wrinkle Is Incredibly Sad

Order 66 is one of the most tragic parts of Star Wars, but somehow Part V of Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi found a way to make it even worse.

The following contains spoilers for Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 1, Part V, streaming now on Disney+.

For much of Obi-Wan Kenobi, fans haven’t cared for Reva’s as the series’ antagonist. Racist comments aside, her character was one-dimensional, angry and just kind of annoying. However, that all changed in Part V. After learning her tragic backstory and shocking endgame, Reva became one of the most intriguing villains in the Star Wars franchise.

It turned out that Reva was a Youngling during Order 66, and that’s how she knew Anakin was Darth Vader. On the night of The Great Purge, she survived by playing dead, and ever since, she had been plotting to kill Vader and get her revenge. However, when Obi-Wan offered to make an alliance and fight Vader as a team, she flat out refused. The reason for her refusal was depressing, and it offered a new perspective on the tragedy of Order 66.

There’s no debate that the execution of Order 66 was the darkest moment in Star Wars history. A thousand years of Sith planning and plotting led to the moment where the Jedi Order was nearly destroyed in one fell swoop. For the Jedi at the Temple, the attack was totally unexpected. Anakin attacked and decimated them because they weren’t even ready for combat. Reva was among the victims, and her survival painted a grim picture for all the Jedi that Anakin killed on that dark night.

When Obi-Wan offered to form an alliance with Reva, she refused because she blamed Obi-Wan for creating Vader. His failure has a Jedi Master had allowed Anakin to fall to the dark side and become a murderous, backstabbing Sith Lord. Not only that, Obi-Wan wasn’t at the Temple to defend the helpless non-combatants, when the newly christened Vader arrived to slaughter them. So, Reva wanted revenge on Vader, but she hated Obi-Wan with an insatiable passion.

That perspective added a whole new wrinkle to Order 66, especially for Obi-Wan. As the Kenobi series has repeatedly shown, he was broken by the fall of the Jedi Order. His entire life and support system — everything that he had ever lived for and believed in — was gone. However, knowing that he was (at least partially) responsible for everything was a difficult pill to swallow.

Now, Reva’s comments have ripped open that old wound, and added a heartbreaking new perspective. Obi-Wan blamed himself for the Jedi’s fall, but it would have been even worse to realize that other Jedi personally blamed him, too. Of course, the Jedi in the field wouldn’t have known what had happened, but the Jedi that Anakin slaughtered at the Temple would have immediately recognized Obi-Wan’s failure to correctly train Anakin. Even though they didn’t live to blame him, they knew it was Obi-Wan’s fault as they died. Realizing that his friends died blaming him for Anakin’s fall would have severely harmed Obi-Wan’s view of his own legacy and helps to explain exactly why he was so broken to start the series. It’s a sad reality, but it adds yet another appropriately heartbreaking aspect to Order 66.

The first season of Obi-Wan Kenobi is available to stream on Disney+.
