Obi-Wan Kenobi makes a surprisingly obvious mistake in his Disney+ series that could have put young Luke Skywalker in the path of the Inquisitors.
The following contains spoilers for Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 1, Episode 4, “Part IV,” now streaming on Disney+.
The Obi-Wan Kenobi series hasn’t made Ewan McGregor’s character the deft Jedi that some fans assumed he would be. Instead, he’s struggling with the Force — which is understandable given the Order 66 tragedy that rendered his Order nearly extinct. Fans have seen him fumbling around while he tries to get Princess Leia Organa back to Alderaan and hopes to avoid Darth Vader’s fiery wrath after years of somehow avoiding him.
Luckily, Obi-Wan had Tala and smugglers from the Path to help him rescue the girl from Fortress Inquisitorious and its terrible security. However, after another firefight with the Empire he made yet another mistake — this one particularly obvious. And this latest slip-up nearly spoiled the greater purpose that Obi-Wan has been working toward all along.
Obi-Wan’s goal has been to keep Luke Skywalker safe on Tatooine in hopes of training him to be a Chosen One. But he messed up in “Part IV” during the skirmish on Jabiim that saw Reva and her troops come after him and his allies when he lost his com-link. Thankfully, he was able to convince Reva to turn on Darth Vader after she was revealed to be a former youngling and successfully escaped.
But after Vader subsequently impaled Reva and left her for dead, she found Obi-Wan’s com-link in the sandy pit of the base. It had fallen out of his brand new wardrobe in an incredibly amateur error, because the device could easily be used against Luke. Earlier, he had received a message from Bail Organa about protecting Leia — and if Bail needed to tend to Luke to keep him safe. This message easily implied that Luke was also someone important. Reva, who has a past with Vader, could possibly deduce that Luke is Anakin Skywalker’s son.
Since Reva had been on Tatooine hunting Obi-Wan previously, she could head there in search of Luke — and Vader could follow her. Or Reva could try to murder Luke to exact revenge for the younglings Anakin killed. She might even try to kidnap Luke to manipulate in her own way. Star Wars fans know Luke remained at the homestead for Old Ben to find in A New Hope, so a bit of the mystique is gone, but that doesn’t mean Obi-Wan Kenobi can’t have Reva cause trouble for him, Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru.
Thanks to Obi-Wan not securing his com-link better, Luke is potentially exposed to someone who Vader has played like a fiddle and who often runs on emotion. Unless Obi-Wan talks some sense into her, she could become a monster in her own right. He has already picked up on a disturbance in the Force, so one can only hope that it’s not because something has happened involving Luke.
New episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi stream Wednesdays on Disney+.
I’m a former Chemical Engineer. It was boring so I decided to write about things I love. On the geek side of things, I write about comics, cartoons, video games, television, movies and basically, all things nerdy. I also write about music in terms of punk, indie, hardcore and emo because well, they rock! If you’re bored by now, then you also don’t want to hear that I write for ESPN on the PR side of things. And yes, I’ve written sports for them too! Not bad for someone from the Caribbean, eh? To top all this off, I’ve scribed short films and documentaries, conceptualizing stories and scripts from a human interest and social justice perspective. Business-wise, I make big cheddar (not really) as a copywriter and digital strategist working with some of the top brands in the Latin America region. In closing, let me remind you that the geek shall inherit the Earth. Oh, FYI, I’d love to write the Gargoyles movie for Disney. YOLO. That said, I’m on Twitter @RenaldoMatadeen. So holler.
