One Piece Fans Discover Thor Director Taika Waititi Is One of Them

Iconic filmmaker Taika Waititi outs himself as a One Piece fan by wearing a sweater with Luffy’s grinning face emblazoned across the front.

Taika Waititi revealed himself to be a fan of Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece.

In a behind-the-scenes picture from the production of Thor: Love and Thunder, the iconic filmmaker can be seen wearing a sweater with Luffy’s Wanted Poster emblazoned across the front. While the image is blurred out, likely due to copyright concerns, One Piece fans can easily make out the Straw Hat’s captain’s giant smile and signature headwear. IGN’s Mike Mamon asked the director about the shirt on Twitter, and Waititi confirmed that it was indeed a piece of Luffy-braned apparel.

Oda’s ongoing manga made its debut in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1997 and has produced over 100 volumes worth of content. One Piece tells the story of Monkey D. Luffy, a young pirate with a rubber body and a dream to become the next King of the Pirates. The plot follows him and his wacky crew as they adventure across the Grand Line in search of the titular One Piece, a mysterious treasure left behind by a legendary pirate.

One Piece is the best-selling manga of all time with over 490 million copies in circulation around the world. It is a cornerstone of pop culture, inspiring a plethora of spinoffs, adaptations and tie-ins, including Toei Animation’s iconic anime, which premiered in October 1999 and has produced over 1,000 episodes. Moreover, the next movie in the franchise, One Piece Film: Red, which will focus primarily on Red-Haired Shanks and his pirate crew, is set to debut in August and Netflix is currently developing a live-action adaptation of One Piece.

Waititi’s new movie, Thor: Love and Thunder, is scheduled to hit theaters on July 8, and the director describes it as “sort of like a midlife crisis film, really.” The story will see the titular thunder god, once again played by Chris Hemsworth in what is reportedly his final Marvel Cinematic Universe appearance, trying to discover inner peace while also attempting to stop Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale) from living up to his epithet and killing all gods. To do so, he’ll team up with Korg (Waititi), Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and his ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who has become a superhero in her own right.

Waititi is also working on a Star Wars movie, which will expand the galactic mythos. “I would like to take something new and create some new characters and just expand the world, otherwise it feels like it’s a very small story,” he told GamesRadar+. While no official release date has been announced, the film is expected to premiere sometime in late 2023.

The One Piece anime is available on Crunchyroll.
