Solar Opposites Showrunner Accused of Homophobic Writers Room Behavior

Solar Opposites boss Josh Bycel has been accused by a former production assistant of making homophobic comments in the writers’ room of the show.

Several producers behind Hulu’s Solar Opposites are being accused of rude and unprofessional behavior in the show’s writers’ room, including alleged homophobic jokes made by showrunner Josh Bycel.

The accusations come from Twitter user Heidi Butler, a former assistant for both Solar Opposites and Rick and Morty, who detailed her experience working on both shows. “Mike McMahan, [Solar Opposites]’s creator, led the morning roast of #preWGA tweets,” Butler wrote. “[McMahan] would screenshare and bring up the tweets he wanted to make fun of. Josh Bycel, the showrunner, made the homophobic comments that I reported to Sydney Ryan, the producer, who helped retaliate against me.” In a subsequent tweet, Butler continued, “I got blacklisted from the room I’m referencing because I reported homophobic comments that made me uncomfortable. This incident not only happened, but I share it so other professionals can be aware of the toxicity that’s thriving behind closed doors.”

Aspiring screenwriters looking for exposure within the filmmaking community may use the social media hashtag #preWGA, meant to be used by individuals who have not yet worked on a WGA (Writers Guild of America) film and/or TV show. Butler discouraged use of the hashtag in a previous tweet due to the behavior of McMahan and others mocking aspiring writers, but did clarify that people should use the tag “if [they’re] still comfortable doing so” and that she was “proud of those” brave enough to use it.

Butler’s recent accusations fall in line with her previous ones made earlier this year. In March, she went into greater detail about the experience, saying, “Working for [Rick and Morty production company] Green Portal has taken away my confidence, my desire to create, and frankly has driven me to a pretty shitty mental health place,” Butler wrote at the time. “At this point, I just want to make sure they don’t get away with treating another assistant like this.”

Created by McMahan and co-creator of Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty Justin Roiland, Solar Opposites was renewed by Hulu for a fourth season in June 2021. The animated comedy sci-fi series centers on a team of four aliens who crash land on Earth and attempt to build a new life in suburban America while continuing their mission.

Solar Opposites Season 3 will premiere on Hulu on July 13.
