The romance film Suzume No Tojimari or Suzume’s Door Lock by writer and film director Makoto Shinkai is set to be released in Japanese theaters on November 11, 2022. Shinkai announced the upcoming movie at a press conference in Japan on December 15th, 2021.
According to Shinkai, the film centers on the need for closure and closing doors left open as the name depicts. The film revolves around a teenager Suzume who discovers a door that turns out to be a portal. This door triggers other doors throughout Japan that cause problems in its wake. It is up to Suzume to shut these doors and restore stability. The press release offers full details on the plot of the film:
Suzume, a 17-year-old girl who lives in a quiet town in Kyushu, meets a young man on a journey “looking for doors.” Suzume follows him to the ruins of a dilapidated building in the mountains. However, there, she finds a free-standing, undisturbed door as if “it” alone were saved from devastation. Suzume feels drawn by an invisible power and reaches out to the door… Soon, doors all over Japan start opening one after another. The doors that opened must be closed to shut out the calamity that lays on the other side.
—Stars, sunset, and the morning sky. Also, the places she wanders into have a sky where all hours of the day seem to blend—
Beckoned by the mysterious doors, Suzume’s “journey of closing doors” begins.
The film’s publication is credited to Studio CoMix Wave Films, while the known crew are Masayoshi Tanaka as character designer, Kenichi Tsuchiya as animation director, and Takumi Tanji as art director. The date for international release by Crunchyroll is in 2023.
