Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi explains why he had to put Chris Hemsworth’s bare butt on the silver screen.

During an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Waititi was asked about a particularly memorable moment from of Love and Thunder‘s trailers in which the God of Thunder is left baring it all from behind. “You get the full Hems-worth,” Waititi said, promising audiences that “In the movie, it’s not pixilated.”

When the host pointed out that the director had also included the Hulk’s bare buttocks in Thor: Ragnarok, Waititi defended the decision. “Some will say it’s an obsession. I will say it’s art.” He added, “I tell you what though, I mean, with Chris, he’s worked so hard on that. You know it’s, it’s so many squats.”

The upcoming film sees the Marvel Cinematic Universe star return to the role of Thor alongside Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster, who now wields Mjolnir and all its electrifying power. Thor: Love and Thunder also marks the introduction of the Greek pantheon to the MCU, led by Russell Crowe’s Zeus. The gods will be facing off against Christian Bale’s deicidal Gorr the God Butcher, who is also making his live-action debut in the film.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has previously commented on his hopes that Hemsworth will continue to appear as Thor in the future movies set within the sprawling superhero universe. “I know this: there are many, many other Thor stories in the comics that we talk about a lot,” Feige said. “And as we watch Chris Hemsworth continue to grow and evolve as a major acting talent, I would be excited to see how he keeps evolving this complex character.”

Hemsworth also discussed the longevity of the role. The actor stated, “Each time, if the opportunity comes up and presents itself [to play Thor], I’m just open to whatever creative exploration can happen, thanks to different writers and directors and so on. But I love playing the character, I really do.” Hemsworth went on to explain that his one requirement for returning as the Odinson is that the stories need to be fresh and exciting, noting that he isn’t keen to stay in the role if it becomes repetitive.

Thor: Love and Thunder blasts into theaters on July 8.
