The Boys Boss Admits Herogasm’s Marketing May Have ‘Overhyped the Splooge’

Showrunner Eric Kripke says online that The Boys Season 3 may have overhyped its “Herogasm” episode beforehand, or at least the wrong element of it.

The following article contains spoilers for The Boys Season 3, Episode 6, “Herogasm,” which released Friday on Prime Video.

The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke admits that the superhero drama’s “Herogasm” episode may have been overhyped in one aspect.

Kripke posted on Twitter, “Sure, maybe we overhyped the splooge, but underhyped the emotional splooge. [“Herogasm”] is LIVE on [Prime Video]!!” In the week leading up to the episode, which adapts The Boys‘ comic miniseries focused on a massive Supe orgy, the show was promoting the episode with emojis rejected by Twitter, a special screening of “Herogasm” in Las Vegas and more. However, though the episode features numerous naked Supes and extras, Kripke’s message alludes toward the fact that “Herogasm” also gives fans some serious emotional moments that have been anticipated for some time.

For one, “Herogasm” finally delivers the teased inevitable showdown between Billy Butcher and Homelander. With the playing field leveled by V24 (a temporary version of the superpower-granting Compound V drug), Butcher (Karl Urban), Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) and Hughie (Jack Quaid) take on Homelander (Antony Starr) in a massive brawl, leaving the deranged leader of the Seven super team with no choice but to run (really fly) away. Thus, the three fail to take out the show’s biggest menace, despite the attempt costing a lot of destruction and death in the process.

Soldier Boy once again loses control over his powers prior to the brawl, killing 12 Supes and civilians, according to Starlight (Erin Moriarty). Another emotional moment arrives with Starlight’s voluntary public unmasking as Annie January, condemning Soldier Boy, Homelander and most of Vought International’s superheroes as the fake do-gooders they are. Her livestream message ends with Starlight quitting her role as co-captain of the Seven and vowing to keep fighting Vought and exposing the truth about the company.

Other arcs for the show seemingly come to a close during “Herogasm” as well. Hughie not only confronts A-Train for murdering Robin — the first major casualty of the series’ premiere — but the Supe apologizes to Hughie for his past actions. A-Train then gets revenge on Blue Hawk (Nick Wechsler) by murdering him for his brutality towards African Americans and paralyzing A-Train’s brother. However, the action causes A-Train’s heart to fail, killing the key member of the Seven.

The episode also features a showdown with mob boss Little Nina (Katia Winter), the revelation of how Soldier Boy killed Mother’s Milk’s (Laz Alonso) family, a fight between Hughie and Annie and more. So, when Kripke claims that the show “underhyped the emotional splooge,” all of these moments happen in a single episode involving a yearly Supe orgy created by Soldier Boy and Stormfront in 1952.

“Herogasm” and the episodes of The Boys preceding it are now available to stream on Prime Video. As of writing, there are two more episodes in Season 3 left to release, with new episodes releasing on Fridays.
