The Boys Just Warped the MCU’s Most Iconic Lines

The most iconic lines from the Marvel Cinematic Universe just got warped as Season 3 of The Boys found Billy Butcher’s crew crossing moral lines.

The following contains spoilers for The Boys Season 3, Episode 5, “The Last Time to Look on This World of Lies,” streaming on Prime Video.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans experienced some pretty epic lines. Making the list is the “Avengers Assemble!” rallying call from Captain America in Avengers: Endgame, while Iron Man also had his iconic “I am Iron Man!” line in his 2008 debut, as well as when he rocked the Infinity Gauntlet against Thanos. However, the most iconic ones came when heroes were at their most desperate.

In Spider-Man: No Way Home, Aunt May remixed Uncle Ben’s signature advice to Peter Parker. And then there’s the line that paved the way for Cap to inspire his team as they embarked on the Time Heist to undo Thanos’ Snap. Interestingly, as The Boys‘ third season continues to show how power corrupts, these lines got warped terribly.

In Spider-Man lore, “With great power comes great responsibility,” is a tenet spoken by Uncle Ben to gently admonish Spidey. The line inspired Pete to be better after his ego contributed to Ben’s death, and has been recreated for the Sony movies, as well as for many cartoons and comics. The MCU had Marisa Tomei’s Aunt May saying it just before she died.

On The Boys, Billy Butcher reworked the line when Queen Maeve visited. She dropped off more temporary Compound V for him and his crew to power up on as they searched for Soldier Boy to use him to kill the maniacal Homelander. Still, she berated Billy for wanting to be a superhero, while Billy hated on her and all other Supes. As he examined the vial with the green serum, he admitted, “With great power comes the absolute certainly that you’ll turn into a right c–t!”

It was classic Billy, all in denial over how he was both addicted to and enjoying the powers the concoction provided him. The bulletproof skin and laser eyes made him feel like a god who might be able to kill Homelander. This bit of honesty and vulnerability then led to him and Maeve having sex, reiterating both were losing their way in the mission to kill Homelander.

The other line that got twisted was Cap’s “Whatever it takes!” mantra, which motivated Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to get Infinity Stones from the past to undo Thanos’ Snap. It was risky, but Cap felt it was worth it. On The Boys, Hughie mentioned being desperate to Starlight early on regarding how they’d do anything to kill Homelander.

In “The Last Time to Look on This World of Lies,” Hughie said he’d do “whatever it takes,” but this new plan wasn’t something Starlight approved of. He and Billy offered up Crimson Countess as a sacrifice, which inspired Soldier Boy to join them once he killed his beloved for betraying him to the Russians. Starlight couldn’t believe he’d go this far, lying to her about taking the 24-hour V, and also, being cool with Billy drugging Mother’s Milk, so they could run this scheme. Ultimately, she saw three dudes hopped up on power, who were losing their heroic identities, and becoming the very monsters they swore to fight.

New episodes of The Boys premiere every Friday on Prime Video.

I’m a former Chemical Engineer. It was boring so I decided to write about things I love. On the geek side of things, I write about comics, cartoons, video games, television, movies and basically, all things nerdy. I also write about music in terms of punk, indie, hardcore and emo because well, they rock! If you’re bored by now, then you also don’t want to hear that I write for ESPN on the PR side of things. And yes, I’ve written sports for them too! Not bad for someone from the Caribbean, eh? To top all this off, I’ve scribed short films and documentaries, conceptualizing stories and scripts from a human interest and social justice perspective. Business-wise, I make big cheddar (not really) as a copywriter and digital strategist working with some of the top brands in the Latin America region. In closing, let me remind you that the geek shall inherit the Earth. Oh, FYI, I’d love to write the Gargoyles movie for Disney. YOLO. That said, I’m on Twitter @RenaldoMatadeen. So holler.
