In the high-octane Season 3 of The Boys, Team Homelander just got its own civil war at Vought International, but it has a sadistic twist.
The following article contains spoilers for The Boys Season 3, Episode 4, “Glorious Five Year Plan,” which aired June 3 on Amazon Prime Video.
In Season 3 of The Boys, Homelander (Anthony Starr) has had quite a bittersweet ride. He lost the xenophobic Stormfront, but it emboldened him to be his true self. As a result, he sent a public message confirming his belief that he is a superior being. It summed up what Billy Butcher and Co. knew, and why they continued on their Russian mission to find a weapon to kill him.
However, at home, Homelander kept being a jerk, not caring who hated him. His main goal was to make teammates on the Seven like Starlight and Maeve squirm. Interestingly, after he brought back A-Train and Deep to form his own crew at Vought International, a civil war broke, but with a sadistic twist.
Homelander ignored Deep’s #MeToo moment with Starlight in Season 1, and the fallout from that. All he wanted was someone to haze, letting Deep know he was only being kept as a pet to anger Starlight. Still, Deep lapped it up, especially because he craved being a celebrity again.
As for A-Train, despite losing his powers, Homelander kept him around to stir competition with Deep. Things backfired, though, when A-train, who’s trying to rehabilitate his brand, asked about bringing down a racist in his neighborhood. Homelander shot that idea down, with Deep enabling his white supremacist attitude.
It led to A-Train and Deep scuffling, spilling secrets about each other. A-Train gave Billy’s team intel on Stormfront being a Nazi, which led to her being outed, and eventually, her death. As for Deep, he found Season 1 footage of Homelander letting innocent people die on a plane, which Starlight wanted to use to expose the evil Superman. As expected, when Homelander broke the fight up, he picked Deep’s side, and then proceeded to body-shame A-Train.
There’s a chance, though, Homelander, with his super-hearing, already knows what the two did and is them for fun. After all, he does have a god complex. He doesn’t even care for the phone footage as leverage, because if it comes out, he warned Starlight he’d jump at the chance to destroy mankind. And honestly, he won’t mind the betrayal that exposed Stormfront, because this allowed him to show his unforgiving, egotistical side.
Instead, the demented Homelander is the kind of guy who’d enjoy traitors trying to take each other down. A-Train did get into his good graces a bit, spilling the fact that Supersonic wanted to join Starlight and kill the tyrant. But still, even after Homelander murdered Supersonic, A-Train isn’t someone he’ll make his deputy. As it stands, it’s all a guessing game, with Homelander keeping his puppets dancing. Someday he may soak in the fun of killing them, even if it’s too easy a task, but for now, he’s savoring the power he’s lording and how fearful folks are hopping around, trying to please him.
The Boys Season 3 is available on Prime Video, with new episodes releasing Fridays.
I’m a former Chemical Engineer. It was boring so I decided to write about things I love. On the geek side of things, I write about comics, cartoons, video games, television, movies and basically, all things nerdy. I also write about music in terms of punk, indie, hardcore and emo because well, they rock! If you’re bored by now, then you also don’t want to hear that I write for ESPN on the PR side of things. And yes, I’ve written sports for them too! Not bad for someone from the Caribbean, eh? To top all this off, I’ve scribed short films and documentaries, conceptualizing stories and scripts from a human interest and social justice perspective. Business-wise, I make big cheddar (not really) as a copywriter and digital strategist working with some of the top brands in the Latin America region. In closing, let me remind you that the geek shall inherit the Earth. Oh, FYI, I’d love to write the Gargoyles movie for Disney. YOLO. That said, I’m on Twitter @RenaldoMatadeen. So holler.
