The Flash Season 8, Episode 19, “Negative, Part One” Recap & Spoilers

As The Flash Season 8 reaches its penultimate episode, Team Flash faces the CW series’ ultimate enemy. Here’s a spoiler-filled recap of The Flash.

The following contains spoilers for The Flash Season 8, Episode 19, “Negative, Part One,” which aired Wednesday, June 22 on The CW.

The Flash Season 8 shocked Team Flash — and the fans — when it revealed that Deon Owens, the living avatar of the Still Force, appeared to have gone villainous and kidnapped Iris West. While the team scrambled to rescue Iris, Central City saw the arrival of new speedster Dr. Meena Dhawan and a heroic Eobard Thawne, in contrast to the evil Thawne left powerless and imprisoned on the remote island of Lian Yu. And as the season reaches its penultimate episode, one fan-favorite character makes the ultimate sacrifice while Deon resurfaces to carry out his fiendish plot.

In the Central City of 2049, Nora and Bart are shocked when Iris appears in their home after emerging from the Still Force, with Deon preventing them from taking her back to her own time. Meanwhile, back in present-day Central City, Team Flash has developed a super-suit for Meena (played by Kausar Mohammed) that monitors her connection to the Negative Speed Force so it will prevent her from being corrupted again. When Meena struggles with maintaining control over her speed, Barry encourages her by revealing his civilian identity, pointing out how far she has come while recommending she use Fast Track as her superhero name.

On Lian Yu, the villainous Thawne believes that Deon has arrived to free him and restore his super-speed — only for Deon to quickly age Thawne to death. While Barry and Team Flash investigate Thawne’s death and Deon’s whereabouts, former supervillain Rosa Dillon confronts Cecile Horton over stealing her superpowers to use in her own career and back at Fast Track Labs, Meena and the good Eobard Thawne are confronted by Deon and the other Forces… who want to kill this Thawne too.

Barry drives away the Forces after the group reveals that they are out to to assert full control over the Negative Forces. This development coincides with the arrival of Nora from 2049, seeking Barry’s help after discovering that Iris’ temporal sickness was caused by the presence of negative tachyons in her body. While visiting Royal Flush Gang leader Mona Taylor in Iron Heights, Cecile steals her telepathic powers and learns what Team Flash is facing. She vows to lend her help.

Cecile leads Allegra Garcia and Chester P. Runk to take on the Negative Forces, with Cecile’s telepathy keeping Deon at bay while Chester outsmarts Fuerza. Barry coaches Meena on how to share her connection to the Negative Speed Force with Thawne; the three speedsters charging into battle just as the Negative Forces overpower Cecile’s group. This battle triggers worsening temporal sickness for Iris in 2049, leaving Nora and Bart even more concerned about their mother’s condition.

While Meena and Thawne keep the Negative Forces busy, Barry runs around Central City to build up enough Speed Force lightning for one major attack that would neutralize their enemies for good. Just as Barry flings the lightning, Deon summons Iris back to present-day to take the full brunt of the blast instead — and she dies in Barry’s arms. This sacrifice is revealed to also cause the resurrection of the evil Thawne, who bursts free from his heroic counterpart as the final battle in The Flash Season 8 begins.

Developed for television by Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg and Geoff Johns, The Flash airs Wednesdays at 8pm ET/PT on The CW.
