Thor: Love and Thunder Footage Reveals Two MASSIVE New Cast Members

The latest promo for Thor: Love and Thunder marks the first appearance of the MCU’s Celestials since the 2021 film Eternals.

The latest trailer for Marvel Studios’ Thor: Love and Thunder brings two new (and quite literally massive) players into the fold.

The new promo, titled “Team,” features what certainly appears to be two Celestials, marking the ancient beings’ first Marvel Cinematic Universe appearance since the 2021 film Eternals. That said, after (understandably) sitting out non-cosmic MCU projects like Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Hawkeye and Moon Knight, it remains to be seen just how big a role the Celestials will play the space-faring, god-heavy Love and Thunder.

Of course, the Celestials have been part of the MCU for a while now, with Eson the Searcher having made a cameo in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy. The film’s 2017 sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, introduced the (self-proclaimed) Celestial known as Ego, revealing that his estranged son, Peter Quill/Star-Lord, was a half-Celestial hybrid — though Ego and Star-Lord are far cries from the towering, heavily-armored aesthetic the Celestials are known for. The titanic, cosmic beings got their most prominent showing to date in Eternals, though, as previously mentioned, have been kept on ice since.

In addition to apparently bringing back the Celestials, the fast-approaching Love and Thunder introduces Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale) as its main antagonist. This is of note, as while Gorr has his sights set on Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and company at the moment, the Celestials are considered gods in their own right. In other words, the God of Thunder and his friends might not be the only ones on the proverbial chopping block. (Let’s hope they like Huey Lewis and the News.)

Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, the fourth Thor film finds the God of Thunder traveling the stars with the Guardians of the Galaxy. However, Thor ultimately decides to leave violence in the past and live a life of peace. But thanks to Gorr, the Avenger is forced out of retirement. To combat this new threat, Thor forms a team consisting of himself; Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), the new King of Asgard; and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who now wields Mjolnir as the Mighty Thor.

See what role the Celestials have to play when Thor: Love and Thunder releases in theaters on July 8.
