The history of anime is rich with various characters and it is much more diverse and fantastic than traditional Western animation. Among these numerous characters, some of them have definitely influenced the world of anime more than others, and in this article, we have decided to talk about some of them. This article is going to contain a list of the 50 most impactful female anime characters and anime girls in the history of the genre. They are going to be ranked in random order, since it is almost impossible to objectively evaluate their historical impact.
Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck or Nell is the old Tercera Espada. She is a former Adjuchas. Her mask is at the level of her forehead and has a visible crack. Her hair is green and her eyes are brown. When she first appears, she has the appearance of a young child who becomes attached to Ichigo, whom she calls “Itsugo”.
In fact, Nell is a “young” woman with green hair, a big breast and red marks on her cheekbones on her face. Officially, she is admitted to high school as part of a Japan-Scandinavia student exchange, but she is actually the president of the occult research club, serving as a den for demons under her orders. Her rank as a chess piece is “King”, she is the one who directs the pieces under her orders, of which Issei is a part.
She is an almost invincible heroine, who quickly understands the incredible power slumbering in Issei and consequently takes a great interest in him. His brother is actually one of the Demon Kings, Lord Sirzerch.
Both possess the power of destruction, a fantastic ability to pulverize any target. She resurrects Issei as her servant after finding him dead, slain by a fallen angel, and possessing a rare Sacred Relic.
Rika Nonaka is among the first three tamers (along with Henry and Takato) to have obtained her Digivice. Her Digimon is Renamon, with whom she shares a relationship more similar to that between two humans than between a human and a Digimon.
She has a rather “tomboy” look, with jeans topped with small belts at one of the legs, a green and white T-shirt marked with a broken heart on the chest, red bracelets, and a yellow collar.
Franchise: Tokyo Ghoul
Rize Kamishiro is a scaly type ghoul, also called “The Glutton” for her appetite. She is from the 11th but moved to the 20th six months before her death. At the start of the series, she attacks Ken Kaneki, a student in love with her whom she manipulates to be able to devour him. During the attack, beams fall on her and kill her.
His organs are transplanted onto Ken Kaneki, which transforms him into a half-man, half-ghoul. Rize Kamishiro is a powerful, formidable and particularly sadistic ghoul, who takes pleasure in using her charms to trap prey and look down on others.

Its sword is specially designed for its small size and unique in its kind; the only one among the slayer’s blades that is unsuitable for slicing, there is only its tip which has a sharp edge because it uses its weapon to prick with a poison coated with wisteria, an alternative method designed for it to kill demons.
Franchise: Seven Deadly Sins
Princess Elizabeth is the Third Adopted Princess of the Kingdom of Liones. She is the second main protagonist of the series, and a suspected survivor of the Kingdom of Danafor, and a former waitress at the Boar Hat Tavern on her journey to reform the Seven Deadly Sins, ultimately becoming their premier asset and healer.
She is also the 107th reincarnation of Goddess Elizabeth, the only daughter of the Supreme Deity, from 3,000 years ago, who also reincarnated as Liz, a Sacred Knight.
She is Tai’s little sister, and will join the DigiDestined later in the series as she was unable to join the Digital World earlier, as she was ill when going to summer camp. She appreciates her brother very much and always worries about others. Kari received the symbol of Light; she seems to be the only one with psychic powers. She is 8 years old in the first season, and 11 years old in the second season.
Franchise: My Hero Academia
A rather frank and lively girl, a 1-A student like Midoriya and Bakugo. Despite her usually sunny appearance and character, she is very determined to become a great heroine. She has a Quirk called Zero Gravity, which allows her to cancel the effect of gravitational force on whatever object she touches with the pads she has on the last joint of her fingers and can cancel the effect of her power at any time. She can also make herself free from gravity by placing her hands in a particular position.
Franchise: Tokyo Ghoul
A natural one-eyed ghoul, Eto was born from the union between the ghoul Kuzen Yoshimura and the human Ukina, a journalist investigating the “V” organization. Raised by Noro in the 24th arrondissement in order to live hidden from V, Eto is the founder of the Aogiri Tree, which she rules in the shadows, leaving Tatara the role of principal.
Her body is completely covered with bandages; she wears an aubergine sleeveless tunic, with floppy ears attached to the hood. At the same time, she is hiding from everyone’s eyes as Sen Takatsuki, a successful horror novel author of which Ken Kaneki, Hinami Fueguchi but also Tsukiyama are particularly fans. As Sen Takatsuki she comes across as a perfectly normal young woman, recognizable by her dyed green hair.
Eto is a particularly sadistic ghoul who takes pleasure in torturing her enemies or other ghouls whom she uses just to wreak havoc.
Joy is the first name of all the nurses, who also look identical, of the Pokémon Centers. They generally have a Chansey (sometimes a Blissey), a Wigglytuff, or a an Audino in Kalos in order to heal Pokémon. Brock generally falls in love with them.

Yamato is the daughter of Kaidou of the Four Emperors. She was raised from a young age to become Kaidou’s heir. Instead, Yamato developed a deep admiration for the samurai Kozuki Oden. After the latter’s death, Yamato decided to “become” Oden by impersonating him and adopting his behavior. As a result of this desire to become Oden, Yamato refers to herself as Kaidou’s son, and Kaidou and his crew also refer to her as such.
Franchise: Fullmetal Alchemist
Riza is none other than the daughter of Mustang’s master alchemy who, at the time of her death, entrusted the care and safety of young Riza to the future Flame Alchemist. Her Digimon partner is Biyomon, and her symbol is that of Love. Sora is 10 years old in the original version. She is Tai Kamiya’s best friend, and also plays soccer. Despite being a tomboy, she takes her own safety into her own hands because of Tai’s naivety. Sora is the voice of reason in the group of DigiDestined. The fact that she is a tomboy created some problems with her very rigorous mother who wanted Sora to quit football to study floral art. Fortunately, Biyomon manages to reconcile Sora with his mother. Sora’s father is often absent.

Nefertari Vivi is the daughter of Cobra and the princess of Alabasta. Even though she is a princess, she does not behave in an arrogant or self-centered way; she cares about the good of her subjects and her country and does not hesitate to put her life on the line.
In combat, she resorts to a dance called Mermaidance, which aims to hypnotize or charm the opponent: in the anime, this dance has been replaced by a perfume that has the same effect. Her weapons are two sharp jewels attached to a wire and to her little fingers with rings, which, when spun quickly, create a cutting weapon called the Peacock Slasher.
Franchise: Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World
Erm is a female oni with blue hair and eyes (an allusion to the famous Japanese tale) and the younger twin sister of Ram; she works with Ram as a servant at Roswaal Manor: she performs her chores and cooks much better than her sister, who is less competent and willing to work.
Ram is also a female oni, but with pink hair and eyes, and the older twin sister of Rem. She works with her as a servant at Roswaal mansion: however, she performs her chores and cooks less well than her sister, who is more competent and voluntary at work. She also has a colder and more distant personality than the latter.
Franchise: Neon Genesis Evangelion
Selected as the Second Children 9, she piloted unit EVA-02. Daughter of Kyôko Langley Zeppelin and of an unknown father, her ancestry is half American, one-quarter German, and one-quarter Japanese. She lived in Germany where she graduated from university at the age of 14. Asuka is a proud, independent, and apparently very confident young girl. She looks down on those around her and constantly wants to be in the spotlight.
Franchise: Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba
Nezuko was a very kind, caring older sister who thought of others first when she was still a human being. However, like the Demon, Nezuko seems to have forgotten much of her memories of man, other than those related to her family. She is still very caring and protective of the people she considers her family members. However, this is mainly due to Sakonji Urokodaki’s influence on her when she slept for two years.
Nezuko also retains some of her human emotions, as she cries when she is sad and smiles when she is happy, but overall she looks devoid of emotion compared to a human. She is still much calmer and less evil than most demons. Ever since she became a demon, Nezuko doesn’t seem to be afraid to fight: she fiercely supports her brother and allies in battle.
A 20-year-old heroine and new inspector of Division 1, she is considered a model citizen, on the one hand for her very weak Psycho-Pass and on the other hand for her maximum score allowing her to join any position. She joins the police because no one else has scored as high as her for this position.
While others have obtained similar scores for more important functions, she considers that she alone is made for this work and that it will allow her to understand the purpose of her existence.
Franchise: Dragon Ball
Bulma is a good-looking, intelligent, but also stubborn girl, who at the beginning of the story creates the dragon radar to locate the dragon balls. She part of her, therefore, to search for her spheres, running into Goku and, impressed by the strength of the latter, convinces him to join her.
Later, after a long relationship with Yamcha, Bulma marries Vegeta, with whom she will have two children, Trunks and Bra. Throughout the series, she stands out for her technical skills and her inventions. Bulma’s character is based on both the princess from the Dragon Boy manga, and the monk Sanzang, the co-star of the story The Journey to the West.
Franchise: Guilty Crown
Singer of the EGOIST group, she is in fact a member of another group. Wounded during an operation to deliver the Void Genome to Gai, she donated it to Ouma. We find out later that she spends the night 2 or 3 times a month with Gai.
Its Void is a sword, which allows its user to create protective barriers against any attack targeting it and platforms by using it as a staircase. We later discover that she is a receptacle created for the purpose of receiving Eve’s soul (Mana Ouma) and resuscitating her during the said Fourth Apocalypse.
She would then bind to the Adam of her choice and spread the Apocalypse virus around the world to create a new human species. But this project fails because Gai and Shū prevent the programming of the Apocalypse Virus. While Shū will be the new president of the quorum, she will support and support him, believing in him despite everything.
Franchise: Code Geass
Despite her important and essential place in history, we don’t know much about this C.C., except that she has a direct connection to the British military, and that Clovis was responsible for the research carried out on her. The day of her meeting with Lelouch, she makes a pact with him and stays close to him to monitor their actions. She also saves Zero on several occasions.

The latter gave her one, that of making herself loved by anyone, because it was C.C.’s biggest dream. Over time, she became a pretty and simple young lady to whom all men courted, but her Geass had reached its peak. At that moment, the Good Sister forced her to assassinate him because she was eternal and could not bear life any longer; only a person with maximum Geass could kill her.
Franchise: Ponyo (Studio Ghibli)
Ponyo, whose real name is Brunhilde, is the main character of the Studio Ghibli film Ponyo, directed by Hayao Miyazaki. She is the daughter of Guranmanmare and Fujimoto. She is very cheerful and curious. Her curiosity prompts her to leave her home. She is also helpful and uses her magic powers to help those around her.
Unlike her father Fujimoto, she makes friends with people. But she doesn’t like to listen to her father. If she doesn’t like something, she just sprays people or frowns. So she cums on her father when he wants to take her to her mother. Sousuke quickly becomes friends with Ponyo.
Lisa doesn’t find the goldfish with a human face strange either. She also enjoys the full trust of her siblings. Her favorite food is ham. So she eats the ham first and leaves the rest of the sandwich. She makes children laugh in unconventional ways, as evidenced by the baby’s smile.
Tsunade then becomes the fifth Hokage of Konoha, and his face appears on the “Hokage wall”. Later, she takes Sakura Haruno as a student and teaches her medical ninjutsu, as well as the secret to her phenomenal strength. By dint of staying with her, Sakura also inherits her temperament, which more than once frightens Naruto, Jiraiya or Kakashi.
Ino Yamanaka also becomes his disciple to learn medical ninjutsu. She also summons slugs to protect villagers and ninjas during Pain’s attack, and uses her colossal chakra supply to heal ninjas and the wounded. Attacked by Shurado (the “murderer” of Jiraiya) and at the end of her strength (having consumed all her chakra for the inhabitants of Konoha), she is saved in extremis by Naruto who destroys Pain’s motorized body in one fell swoop. Naruto then offers him to go drink a tea and rest.
Having consumed too much chakra, she finds herself at the end of the fights in a coma and can no longer ensure her load of Hokage. As the daimyo of the Land of Fire prepares to name Kakashi Hokage after Danzo’s death, Gai steps in to announce that Tsunade has woken up.
Hinata is a kunoichi from Konoha village belonging to the Hyūga clan. Just like Kiba Inuzuka and Shino Aburame, she is part of Team 8 led by Kurenai Yūhi. Hinata’s childhood was relatively difficult. As the heir to the clan, she had to train a lot, a task she accomplished with her father.
At the age of three, she saw her clan put on Neji the cursed seal of “The Bird in a Cage”, something which was remarkable for her since she considered herself responsible for this fact.
Franchise: The Promised Neverland
The central character of The Promised Neverland. She has extraordinary physical and learning abilities. She is one of three children achieving a perfect score (300 points) in the daily exams. Following the “adoption” of Conny, another child from the orphanage, Emma notices that the little girl has forgotten her stuffed bunny and decides to bring it to her before she leaves. Although it is forbidden, she will convince Norman to go to the place of his departure, beyond the portal of the orphanage. They then find out the truth.
Franchise: Neon Genesis Evangelion
She is designated as the First Children 9, pilot of EVA-0017. Her date of birth is unknown. Rei Ayanami is a very introverted, taciturn, and shy girl. Hideaki Anno describes Rei as a girl who is aware that in the event of her death someone else will replace her, and therefore does not particularly appreciate her life.
According to Anno, “her presence, her existence – ostensible existence – is fleeting. She is a very sad young girl.” Living poorly, she believes that she “does not need friends”.
Franchise: Tokyo Ghoul
Tōka Kirishima is a ghoul and a former waitress of the Antiquity. In combat, she wears a mask resembling the head of a white rabbit with pink hair, hence her nickname Rabbit. At the start of the series, she is a 3rd year student at Kiyomi High School.
With the help of Hinami Fueguchi, she kills Inspector Kureo Mado. After the battle of the 11th arrondissement and the departure of Ken Kaneki from Antiquity, she took refuge in studies, gradually realizing her love for the young boy who had become one-eyed ghoul.
She is part of the main group with Brock and Ash intermittently for the first five seasons. From season 6, she returns to the Cerulean Gym to lead it instead of her sisters who cruise around the world. The young girl has decided to follow Ash until he reimburses her for his bicycle destroyed by Pikachu. But finally, she forgets this reason and decides to accompany Ash in Kanto, Johto, and the Orange Archipelago in order to perfect her learning in order to become Master of Water-type Pokémon.

At first, Anna thought Marnie was just her imagination, but she is a real person. She is often visited by Hisako, with whom she enjoys talking about her parents and their extravagant celebrations. However, parents often go out to work. In fact, her father only comes home twice a year. Having spent a lot of time with her parents when she was younger, she loves her parents very much and misses them terribly when they leave for work.
The nanny Nan and two maids who look after Marnie live in the marching house. However, Marnie has a hard time in life as she is mistreated by her servants. So the two maids tried to lock her up in the silo. Kazuhiko treated her gently and was an important support for her later in life. But he died. Her only child, Emily, died in a car accident. All she has left is her granddaughter.
Franchise: Dragon Ball
Uranai Baba is the sister of Master Roshi. She is an old witch who acts as a relay between King Enma and Earth, and who is able to read into the future using her crystal ball. His real name and age are unknown but we can estimate the latter to be over 500 years old.
Endowed with a bad temper, especially at the beginning of the series, she moves by levitating on her crystal ball. She asks astronomical sums of those who need her help (for example to find a lost object), and forces those who cannot pay to face her minions to have access to her services for free.
The young Son Goku, helped by his friends, manages to beat them which allows him to find the Dragon Ball that he lacked.
Franchise: Kiki’s Delivery Service (Studio Ghibli)
The witch Kiki is the protagonist of the film Kiki’s Delivery Service by Hayao Miyazaki from Studio Ghibli. She is a bright girl who is excited to leave her childhood home in Karikiya to become a full-fledged witch according to tradition. She’s so excited about it that she’s even leaving a month ahead of schedule.
She really wants to live in a port city. So she moves to Koriko, where she meets the helpful tower keeper. However, she quickly becomes frustrated because no one can put themselves in her shoes and a police officer even wants to give her a ticket.
Orihime Inoue is a young orphan high school student. Her older brother brought her with him when he ran away from home. Their mother was a prostitute and their father was often absent. They were 18 and 3 years old. So it was he who raised her. However, he died three years before the start of the series. Inoue is nice by nature and has a fairly passive character, she lets herself go too often.
Franchise: Fullmetal Alchemist
Her parents were doctors and had been requisitioned by the army during the Ishbal War. They treated the wounded without distinction of camp, which earned them the respect of all, including the inhabitants of Ishbal. They were unfortunately killed by Scar, who had just regained consciousness after receiving their treatment, gone completely mad when instead of his arm he saw his brother’s.

On the boat, apart from the choice of direction entrusted to Luffy, she commands and indicates the maneuvers to be made. After the Water Seven / Enies Lobby arc, Nami’s head is priced at 16 million Berrys.
Her weapons are the climate baton and the more powerful climate tactic sorcery. Her charm allows her to coax Sanji, whom she leads to the wand. She is the treasurer of the crew; she manages the finances in a very selfish way, giving ridiculous sums to the other members while asking exorbitant interest. The slightest mention of the word Berry makes her capable of anything.
Franchise: Elfen Lied
Kaede / Lucy / Nyu is a young diclonius of around 17 with dark pink hair and dark pink eyes who is tall and thin who was abandoned in an orphanage when she was born. During these first years of life, she did not exhibit the homicidal tendency characteristic of her species.
But, after being subjected to various traumas during her childhood, her murderous instinct was unleashed and she became sadistic and cruel. She was captured and then locked up in research facilities located near the coast of Kamakura.
Several years later, she managed to escape, but during her flight, she suffered a head injury and developed a split personality, Nyu. Nyu is childish, innocent, gentle, and harmless. At first, she doesn’t know what to say “Nyu”, but she gradually acquires the language and manages to say Kōta’s name.
Franchise: One Piece
Upon reaching Water 7, Robin disappears after meeting Blueno, one of the members of CP9. She was forced to work secretly with this group and was seen in the two assassination attempts against Iceburg. She is later discovered by Luffy and his gang at the Galley-La Company offices, just before killing Iceburg. It is then that CP9 is revealed and Robin decides to part ways with the band.
Franchise: Attack on Titan
Mikasa is the last survivor of an oriental clan. As a child, she was rescued and then adopted by Eren and his family. She has since vowed to protect him no matter what. Ranked first in her class and then a member of the Exploration Battalion, she is considered a genius and always keeps her cool, except when Eren is in danger.
Franchise: Porco Rosso (Studio Ghibli)
Fio Piccolo is Mr. Piccolo’s granddaughter. She was born and raised in the USA. She moves to Milan to work in the workshop Piccolo S.P.A. to work for her grandfather. Later she takes over this company. In addition to repairing and building an airplane, she is a skilled pilot. She owns her own private seaplane after taking over her grandfather’s company.
The Studio Ghibli film Porco Rosso introduces Marco Fio’s older sister. Being a woman, she must convince her client Marco Pagot that she is a skilled and capable mechanic. She convinces Marco to let her handle the Savoia S.21 repair job, reminding him that Marco was a pilot himself at 17. This shows that she is goal-oriented and is willing to work even at night.
Whatever Fio sets her mind to, no one can refuse her. So, against Marco’s will, she installs a second seat on the plane. She also has a sense of “romance”. She compares Marco to a frog prince who can turn back into a human with a kiss. She is not afraid of danger and she loves adventure. Fio’s confident and direct manner speaks to the heart of the sky pirate.
In this way, it appeals to a pilot’s sense of honor and can thus convince hostile parties to a short-term ceasefire. Like Gina, with whom she later became close friends, she became friends with the air pirates.
Franchise: Future Diary
Yuno Gasai, known as “the Second” is Yukiteru’s classmate; an excellent pupil, and supposedly fiancée of Yukiteru, she does everything to protect him, even at the cost of her life, following him throughout the game. She wishes Yukiteru to win, but does not know how to control his reactions and hides heavy secrets.
Her Mirai Nikki, the “Diary of Love” is a cell phone that provides her with information about Yukiteru’s future ten minutes in advance.
Franchise: Fairy Tail
Erza Scarlett is one of the main characters in the manga. She is considered to be the strongest woman in the Fairy Tail guild. As a young girl, she was abducted from her village Rosemary along with other children her age to work as a slave in the construction of the Tower of Heaven.
This is where she meets Jellal, Miliana, Shaw, Simon, and Wolly as well as Rob with whom she befriends. Expelled from the tower by Jellal who is controlled by an evil entity, she decides to join Fairy Tail, Rob’s guild. From the moment she arrived at the guild, she was withdrawn and wary of people.
It is Gray who will help her to open up to others, constantly wanting to provoke her. After Natsu’s arrival at the guild, she helps him learn more to read because Ignir, Natsu’s father, had not been able to complete his apprenticeship.
Yoruichi Shihōin appears in the manga as a black cat speaking with a male voice (in the anime, during broadcasts in countries other than Japan, the male aspect of the voice has been enhanced). It is only later that it is discovered that she is in fact a woman, ex-commander of special operations and ex-captain of the 2nd division, 22nd head of the Shihōin family, one of the noble families of Soul Society, which she fled after Kisuke Urahara was banished.
Sakura Haruno, whose current name is Sakura Uchiha, is a Jōnin from Konohagakure, she was the female member of Team 7. Kishimoto created her as the heroine of the series, although she admitted that little perception of what an ideal heroine should be.
As a child, Sakura was teased by other children due to her long forehead, a characteristic that Kishimoto has tried to emphasize in Sakura’s appearances. She was comforted and defended by Ino Yamanaka for teasing, as the two grew older, however, they became distant due to the affection they felt for Sasuke.

When her aunt wants to sell her mother’s kimono, she cries and tugs at her sleeve in vain. She follows her brother everywhere, even if he becomes a criminal. Still, she looks up to him. After all, he is the most important person in her life.

Chihiro Ogino involuntarily enters the magic land with her parents, where her parents are turned into pigs and she is robbed of her name. At first she is moody, childish and skittish. During her stay in the magic world, she surpasses herself and is able to solve her problems. She evolves from a tearful pessimist to a responsible optimist who cares for and protects those around her.
Her extraordinary gift is being able to make friends with everyone. After finding work in the bathhouse and completing the extremely difficult task of cleaning the Rotten God, she receives a valuable herb dumpling from him as a thank you. Even if the people around her, especially Yubaba, the Yunas and the bathhouse workers, are initially unfriendly to her, over time they take the girl to their hearts.

After making the escape, she scours the space aboard her Redtail, swindling those she meets to pay off her debts and almost immediately losing her money at the races. Her meeting with Spike is fortuitous, since she confuses him with a contact in a casino. She will then join the Bebop and its crew.
Rukia Kuchiki is a shinigami, whose fate will change when she meets Ichigo as well as the lieutenant of the Thirteenth Division. She’s a bit of a tomboy who adores rabbits and drawing pictures (which Ichigo says are really awful), but according to Renji, she always has an aura of sweetness around her.
She is nonetheless the trigger character of the manga and she is a really endearing character. She was adopted a little less than 50 years ago by the noble Kuchiki family, a very important shinigami family, and thanks to this she did not need to take an exam to enter Gotei 13. She is part of the 13th Division and is under the command of Jūshiro Ukitake.

Ten thousand years ago, Sailor Moon was still just Princess Serenity, heir to the Silver Millennium, the kingdom on the moon. She is surrounded by Queen Serenity, her mother, and her four bodyguards, Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter, guided by Sailor Venus. The Princess Serenity admires the Earth from afar, which she finds absolutely wonderful.
